You're right! But this casuistry in 10 years, and maybe sooner become a huge problem.
When the whole territory of the USSR and the Russian was the official language and lingua franca (not vouch for the accuracy of wording, but the meaning of that), then the names were written in Russian, ie the official language, therefore, against this one did not resist.
What will a few years? Perhaps, again, will have to make a compromise: for those who were born in, say, the Ukraine prior to the dissolution of the Union, to write names in Russian, for those who are after - in Ukrainian as foreign, or in Russian, but with the original in brackets, as we now do for all foreign artists.
If, for example to the artist's catalog in Ukraine in two languages - Russian and English, here is what comes up with. In the biography of the cities make Odessa, Kiev, Lviv, Mykolaiv, etc., as in the English version must write Odesa, Kyiv, Lviv, Mykolaiv, because the city of Ukrainian and foreign language should be written as heard in the state.

This is where.
In the West, too, there are the traditional spelling.
In France, Kiev still Kiev, EMNIP, ie Kiev.
At least I have a French map of 21 century, where Chisinau - Sishineu, and Kiev - Kiev.
Pozniak metatstso.
By the way, Google gives FRENCH half a million lemon Kiev and 55 thousand KYIV.
Illiterate francophone, only three per cent.

Vivian, yes, one more problem from the area of the same casuistry.

I am sure that it today is not correct. But in this case to argue as an amateur, so do not pretend to correctness.
First of all, you need to understand that this issue is not Ukrainian, and English (etc.) language. There is a longstanding established practice of writing geographical names in the territory of Ukraine, in different languages, dictionaries and enshrined in many international documents. And by the way, where Moscow is Moscow, and Kiev - Kiev (and incidentally, the newspaper The Times just called them).
That translation, which you outlined is essentially the neologism in English "And why do we need a neologism, which is not a native speaker will give a correct idea what yet question?
No names like Kyiv and so will not be recorded in dictionaries, in international instruments, yet these names are not explicitly refer to the respective towns, while native English speaker (this is their diocese!) Will not fix it by myself, I think there is no need invent something in a foreign language. This is the case when the spelling is regulated only on the basis of official documents. No variation. Absolutely dictionary norm.

Note from Vivian
In the biography of the cities make Odessa, Kiev, Lviv, Mykolaiv, etc., as in the English version must write Odesa, Kyiv, Lviv, Mykolaiv, because the city of Ukrainian and foreign language must be written so as sound in the state.

It's all right you say about the practice of translation of Ukrainian names ... But I will cite a few examples of translations, and for you to judge ... it is right or elementary ignorant people to do translations ... I think that the elementary ignorance ...

Small village in the Donbass .. Colored Sands by Ukrainian correctly Кольорові Піски .. at the entrance is a pointer - Цвітні Піски??
One of the areas Luhansk ... Stone Brid ... Correct translation - Kam yany Брід everywhere write Kam yany Brod .... Ibid quarter-Solar, write-Солнєчний must - Sonyachna .... But the town of happiness ... happiness ... Although the writing would have to write - Щастя?? And such examples are the mass ..

Dear Pecheneg, unfortunately, I do not know the Ukrainian language, so plausible answer you can not. In any case: we should talk not about the translation, but a practical transcription title. (Just a simple example: if a foreigner would find in Moscow The Red Square, then not every aboriginal understand what he was asked, as if the same foreigner will be able to pronounce Krasnaya Ploschad, then sooner or later before it gets )

I read the title:
Victoria and Albert Museum organized an exhibition in conjunction with the Air Force
and think: a Royal Air Force (IAF) to do with it?
Then I realized: this is meant BBC.

Pecheneg, where the case of dissolution of the Union, my name was written in accordance with the Estonian grammatical rules so as to pronounce it in Russian .. And in Britain, they say absolutely unrecognizable .. (ES=Estonian "J"; and in English is "J")
That's why I "fell" .. Before NATA NOVA .. (all easier)
and "Lempicka" (Lempicka), for example, in English sounds like "Lempicka" .. etc.

And who I will explain why the name of the ancient Greek city of Olbia
in the original Greek is written "ОЛВІО", in English spelled "OL B IO", although probably should have written "OL V IO".
