По умолчанию Ferdinand Hodler. Love and death.

In issue 2 /2008 Zh. "Tretyakov Gallery" was a touching article about this artist. Tretyakovtsy fellows. It is illustrated with photos and paintings of his wife.

Meeting Hodler this Parisian Valentine Godet-Darel, who was younger than his 20 years, was a new stage in the creation wizard. Despite the fact that Valentine was already incurably ill with cancer, she gave birth to a healthy daughter, the artist Paulette. Hodler's wife becomes a chronicler of illness, he creates a series of paintings and drawings of work in which a ruthless certainty realist depicts her in all stages of painful dying. Valentine left this world in 7 years after they met with the artist, Hodler experienced it for three years.

And I, irrepressible "modernist", quote information about Hodler.: (

Ferdinand Hodler (14/03/1853 - 19/05/1918) - Playstyle works of this Swiss artist has changed from realism to symbolism, from Symbolism to Art Nouveau. Monumental pictures that have emerged in the early XX century, Hodler made a new impetus to the historic painting.

Hodler was born in Bern in the family of the carpenter and a cook and was the eldest of six children. When he was five years old his father died of tuberculosis. Ferdinand's mother remarried, her husband became a widower with five children. In 1867, he died and his mother, and Ferdinand went to Thun, where he began to study painting with a master landscape painter. Three years later, he stopped his studies and earned his living by painting the alpine landscapes for tourists.

1871: Early work in the realistic style. In 1871, Hodler came to Geneva. During a visit to a museum, he met with the artist Barthelemy Mennom, who took him in his drawing class. During the six-year study Hodler acquainted with the works of French realism. His painting "Carpenter", completed in 1875, was the first thematic reflection of working-class life in Switzerland. Upon graduation in 1877, Hodler went on a journey through France and Spain, where he was fascinated by the works of Andrea Mantegna, Raphael and Velazquez. Returning to Geneva, he took off in the Old City space as a workshop. V1879, in imitation of the models Camille Corot, forerunners of Impressionism, Hodler created the painting "Reaper."

1882: Symbolism. In the first half of the 80 Hodler finished with his former impressionist landscapes and turned to the style of early expressionism. Typical in this sense, such films as "brave woman" (1886), which is clearly manifested angular brushwork with energetic lines and clear rhythm. Through acquaintance with the poet Louis Du hozalem Hodler made friends with the Symbolists and addressed topics related to philosophy. It appeared his pictures with stiff, like monuments figures. His style in their harsh and stiff. In a wall painting beer "Crocodile" (1886) style simplified Hodler - smooth tone without transitions, contoured shape and symmetrical forms.

1889: A scandalous picture. In 1887, during a holiday in the Lake of Thun artist met with Bertha Stucki, whom he married two years later (second marriage - with Bert Jacques). In 1889 came "Night", which became the first example of the so-called overlap Hodler: due to the symmetrical repetition of the same colors and shapes the artist wanted to achieve greater consistency and symbolism paintings. After the first show of this work in 1891 in the "Salon d'Automne" in Geneva, the police requested to remove it from the exhibition hall as "an insult to morality" (which was done). The following year, Hodler celebrated the triumph in Paris, presented to the audience now, where people are portrayed in the old free manner. In Paris, he joined the Rosicrucians (grouping of "Rosy Cross", whose members were opposed to realism) and participated in the first Salon Rosy Cross "in 1892, holding created in the same year the painting" disappointing. " The influence of the mystical teachings of the Rosicrucians and there is further work Hodler - "The outcome of the Universe" (1892), "Elected" (1893/94), "Euritmiya" (1894/95).

1894: The historical pattern in the guise of Art Nouveau. In the mid-90 Hodler focused on historical painting. In 1897 he won the competition for the design of Weaponry in the hall of Zurich museum - his scenes were selected from the Swiss military history. This work, as well as executed in the future "Retreat from Marignano" brought a new impetus to the historical paintings of the time. To enhance the entertainment Hodler resorted to the ornamental structure of the lines that a few went beyond the modernistic style. V1907 he performed another wall work on a historical theme: commissioned by the University of Jena created the painting "Uhodyenskih students on a war of liberation against Napoleon" (1908/09). On the recommendation of Max Liebermann he was assigned (in 1911) formalize the meeting room in City Hall Hannoverskoy: the painting "unanimity" depicted a scene oath of loyalty since the Reformation.

1908: Expressive work of the late period. After painting the walls Hodler has created numerous images of alpine landscapes in an abstract manner (eg, "Lake of Thun, 1909), as well as the impressive images of human figures (" Lumberjack ", 1910 ), preparatory to his expressionism. The last major series of works Hodler was devoted to the death of his mistress, Valentine Gode-Darel. In the pictures of this cycle (for example, "Dying", 1915) Hodler tying the elements of reality and psihologizirovaniya. In 1918, the 65-year-old artist died of pulmonary edema in Geneva.

, both stolen in 2004 found work in 2006, they were damaged.
For the first time in Norway was exactly after the theft of paintings in October 2004. National Gallery watched as my fellow countrymen lazily and thoughtlessly "punched the air, apparently whiling away the time remaining before departure. It seems that before Munch them there was absolutely no case. A number of Germans were literally crying over every word recall and "Scream" and "Madonna". The question is, what the devil should this fellow in such places?

Bohemia? Or Russian?
Let's just say - Russian-speaking. The Czechs do not usually go to Scandinavia and Holland for the sake of shopping.

It seems that before Munch them there was absolutely no case. A number of Germans were literally crying over every word recall and "Scream" and "Madonna". The question is, what the devil should this fellow in such places?!
I understand your frustration - I would have cried. The explanation is simple. Germany - a country that has given a lot of Munch, his art there are well known: the first buyers and patrons of the artist were Germans. Until 1908 Munch lived only through orders from the Germans, and in Norway and the press criticism of his destroyed. He long resented their country for the denial. When the end of 1908 he located on treatment in Denmark, Norway, appropriated the royal award - the Order of St. Olaf - and after a big retrospective at the National Gallery of Oslo, hosted by his friend and director of the gallery during their stay in the clinic Munch, the artist has agreed to return to their country. Since that time, between Norway and Germany unfolded unofficial "competition for Munch. Number of exhibitions in both countries, held annually, was approximately equal until 1937, when the power in Germany dramatically changed the policy in the arts and culture. Munch fell into the category degerativnogo art, but because he was a foreign artist, it was advantageous to him not to burn, as poor Nolde, and sell the Norwegians. Here since Germany and lost this competition. Norway is over 90%of Munch's artistic heritage, and in Germany he was a miracle in some private collections. And it is not at all, because disavowed the German Jews, which were mainly collected by Munch, the work is not returned.

Dear Firebird, such interesting messages would not be impaired without a hint of your dislike for certain areas of art. I thought we already agreed that it is fruitless swordplay. If you are doing something for the "modernists", then let it be from the heart!
