Hodler was born in Bern in the family of the carpenter and a cook and was the eldest of six children. When he was five years old his father died of tuberculosis. 1882: Symbolism. In the first half of the 80 Hodler finished with his former impressionist landscapes and turned to the style of early expressionism. On the recommendation of Max Liebermann he was assigned (in 1911) formalize the meeting room in City Hall Hannoverskoy: the painting "unanimity" depicted a scene oath of loyalty since the Reformation.

1908: Expressive work of the late period. After painting the walls Hodler has created numerous images of alpine landscapes in an abstract manner (eg, "Lake of Thun, 1909), as well as the impressive images of human figures (" Lumberjack ", 1910 ), preparatory to his expressionism. The last major series of works Hodler was devoted to the death of his mistress, Valentine Gode-Darel.
