Sotheby's to sell a picture of a fictional artist

Sotheby's auction for the first time in history put on sale picture of abstract expressionist Nat Tate, entitled "Bridge number 114." A press release from the auction house reported that work with the estimate of 3-5 thousand pounds go under the hammer on November 16, passes Lenta.ru.

Fragment of the painting "Bridge No. 114" The picture for the first time the Tate show to the public at an exhibition organized on the eve of the session Sotheby's. The proceeds from the sale of artwork will go to charities in the Artist's Benevolent Institution, to support the artists that are in bad financial situation.

Interest in the film caused primarily by the fact that from the Tate legacy is very little - just 18 paintings. But at Sotheby's believe that the main thing that will attract the audience - that the personality of the artist who never really lived.

Nat Tate is a fictional character in the book of Scottish writer William Boyd's "Nat Tate: An American Artist" (1928-1960), which was released in 1998. The author presented so authentically crafted biography of the painter, that the entire art community the impression that Nat Tate existed in reality. Newspaper The Independent wrote that many artists say that little is known about the artist Tate, but none of them said that he heard about it first.

In Boyd's fraud involved his publisher and some art critics, but at some point, leading art historians realized that it was a hoax. In the book, Boyd used photos from his personal archive, photographs of antique shops, some pictures, which appears on page publications as examples of creative Tate, were written by Boyd.

The writer enthusiastically reacted to the fact that Tate's painting put up for auction. "I am very glad that his popularity and fame continue to fascinate and entertain" - said Boyd. Who is the true author of the film "Bridge № 114" is not specified.

The name "Nat Tate" was the result of contamination of the names of two London galleries - National Gallery and Tate Gallery.
