In 1907 he graduated from the School of river traffic in Nizhny Novgorod. In 1909 he emigrated for political reasons , was in Belgium, then moved to Paris . Made friends with the artists of Montparnasse , a frequent visitor to the artistic cafe "Camélèon". In 1909-14 attended classes at the National School of Fine Arts , Academy of Matisse , master L. Tolstoy , Russian Academy ( at SF Bulakovskogo ) . Became interested in engraving , studied vintage collection of the National Library . Before World War I was the representative of the intermediary between the Russian artists and the Salon des Independants , helped the Russians to participate in the Exhibition .

In 1914-17 was producing leaflets, posters and ads for Russian soldiers on the French front. Performed the first book illustrations : "The three knights and shirt . Tale of the XIII century , " J. de Beziers and " Deaf words " Amari ( both - Moscow, 1916), bibliophile edition of" King Lear "by Shakespeare (Paris, 1916).

In 1919 he began illustrating books for Paris publishing house "Mornay", later - publishing "Fayard", "Trianon", "Crès", "Pot Cassè". Worked in the art woodcuts. In 1920 -30s illustrated about one hundred books , both mass and bibliophile . Performed to illustrate the French edition of Russian authors: "Tales of " Pushkin (1918), "Stories " Gorky (1922), "The Pit " AIKuprin ( 1926), " Diaries " Leo Tolstoy ( 1926) and others designed the book "Song of the working hammer " KD Balmont for the Moscow State Publishing House (1920).

Participated in group exhibitions at the cafe "Le Parnasse" ( 1921 ), "Camélèon" ( 1923 devoted K. Balmont ) and "La Rotonde" ( 1925), Gallery J. Povolotzky ( 1921), woodcuts in the exhibition organized by the P. Bornet ( 1923), an exhibition of Russian art in London (Gallery Whitechapel, 1921) , the International exhibition of Decorative Arts in Paris (1925 ) . In 1925 he held a solo exhibition at the gallery Le Vermillon.

Was friendly with SI Sharshuny , MF Andreenko , KL Boguslawska VI Izdebsky , N. Isaev , PA Hentovoy , attended meetings at Villa Said Anatole France . He was a group of Russian artists " kick ." Published saver , portraits, landscapes of Paris , illustration ( for the story " Peasants" Anton Chekhov 's novel "The Iron Flood " Serafimovich , etc.) in the left editions : "Clarté" (1921-25), " L'Humanitè "(1926-38)," Le Monde "(1928-29) and " Regard "( 1937). In 1926 was one of the organizers and participants of the Moscow exhibition " revolutionary art of the West ."

In 1927 he settled in his home-studio in Fonton - of -Roses , near Paris. Participated in exhibitions in Paris : Book Illustrators (1931), engraver and Illustrators (1937), in the International exhibition of art books (1931, Petit Palais ) , in the salons Populiste ( 1932 ) and Les imagiers ( 1938, 1939 ) . In 1932 won the Grand Prix at the 7th competition "Meilleur artisan de France" ( Best Craftsman in France) . In 1946 the works were shown at the exhibition " In honor of the Victory " , organized in Paris the Union of Soviet patriots.

Created several hundred bookplates , circa 2000 easel paintings and 3,000 separate prints : views of Paris , fabulous scenes , genre scenes , still lifes, portraits (including Leo Tolstoy , Fyodor Dostoyevsky , Nikolai Rimsky -Korsakov Mily Balakirev , Blok , Gorky ) . In 1962 he was awarded the Medal of the International Congress "Ex Libris". In 1967 Fonte -Roses , an exhibition of his work organized by the Municipality .

Spent his final years in Nimes . Due to illness, was forced to leave work. In 1973 a memorial exhibition held at the Museum of Fine Arts in Nimes.

Presented at the Pushkin Museum ( Russia ) , in the National Library in Paris and other French museums .
