![]() Friday, April 23, 2010 11:44 Paintings from the Collection of Vollard, saved from the Nazis as his assistant, first came up for auction Auction house Sotheby's auctioned in London and Paris painting the greatest French artists of the XX century from the collection of the famous French collector and patron beginning of the century Ambroise Vollard. Paintings by Cezanne, Degas, Gauguin, Renoir, Matisse, Picasso and other famous artists were first released after 70 years ago have been rescued from the Nazis by the Assistant Collector, Croatian Jew Erich Shlomovichem, writes The Independent. In the summer of 1939 Shlomovich before leaving France to escape the Nazis hid the part of the collection Vollard in Paris bank. This part of the collection Vollard gave his young assistant, before that year was killed in a car accident. Once the paintings were hidden in the vaults of the bank Societe Generale, Shlomovich fled with his family in his native Yugoslavia, where locals gave them the Nazis. Shlomovich family was sent to a concentration camp and, presumably, was killed in a gas chamber in 1942 at age 27. In 1989, the safe was opened and its contents caused a series of litigation between the heirs of Vollard and Shlomovicha. Vollard's heirs argued that the collector handed Shlomovichu part of his pictures only to the one opened on behalf of the gallery in Belgrade. Litigation dragged on for decades, but eventually was settled in 2006 - part of the collection moved away heirs Vollard, and the part went to Yugoslavia. At the auctions in June, will feature works by Cezanne, Degas, Gauguin and Renoir, for which is expected to rescue up to 26 million dollars. http://www.newsru.com/cinema/23apr2010/klct.html |

The history is incredibly complicated. On the Internet there is almost no information about clashes between the heirs of that - very strange, it would seem that journalists should be to pounce on it.
I found the decision of the Cassation Court. Here's how I understood the situation: When Vollard died about a lot of paintings from his collection in the hands of Eric Shlomovicha, student Yugoslav nationality, arrived in Paris in 1934 Part of these pictures (about 400), he moved to Zagreb where they were exhibited in 1940 at the Museum Fine Arts, and the other part (190 pictures) stored in a safe, which he took on the name of his father in the bank Societe Generale. Sam Slomovich died during the Second World War. At the end of the war, his mother decided to move the picture in Belgrade, but the train, in which they were loaded, was bombed. How much work lost, to say impossible, in the postwar period paintings from this collection appear in different places in Europe. The surviving paintings were confiscated after the war the new communist government, which stated that Shlomovicha there are no heirs, and that the collection belongs to Yugoslavia. In 1946, Societe Generale has decided to open the safe, shot Shlomovichem, as he pays for it stopped coming long ago. Until 1977 the painting was stored in stock bank in Nantes. In 1977 the bank made an inventory of this collection of paintings and intended to sell them at public auction. To this end, he organized the campaign. Vollard's heirs, on the one hand, and Shlomovicha, on the other hand, know about these pictures of the information disseminated by the bank Societe Generale, told of their rights to the picture. On the first court decision paintings were divided between the heirs and the heirs of Vollard Shlomovicha. However, the heirs Shlomovicha argue that Vollard gave Shlomovichu all these pictures, appealed the decision on the grounds that the heirs of Vollard knew about the existence of these pictures at least since 1940 when they were exhibited in the Museum of Belgrade, but he never attempted to obtain them, and consequently, their right to inheritance shall be preskriptsii. For its part, the heirs of Vollard filed a lawsuit, which challenged the law Shlomovicha at these pictures, claiming that they were handed to him on consignment. In addition, both parties file claims against the bank Societe Generale. The Court of Cassation rejected the claims of both sides and decided to return to the court of first instance that the paintings will be divided among the heirs of Vollard and Shlomovicha, who together must reimburse the bank of its costs (a very small amount). As a result, all these heirs have agreed among themselves. In general, Yugoslavia also claim these pictures, but referred to in passing and without explanation. |

Even a simple cell, where a dozen books and almost comes in, costs about 80 euros per year. But now dozens of paintings. Less than 50 thousand euro is unlikely to be worth a 70-year storage. |
