Painter, graphic artist, set designer

Grew up and was educated in St. Petersburg. His younger brother L. Berman. In 1915-1918 he studied at the private studios of artist P. S. Naumov and architect SN Gruzenberg. In 1920 he emigrated, settling in Paris. Together with his brother studied at the Academy P. Ransona of P. Bonnard, M. Denny, ZH.-E. Vuillard, F. Vallotton. In parallel, he studied architecture and archeology, he went to Spain and Italy, took private lessons from an architect E. Terry.

Since 1923 he has exhibited his work in the Salon d'Automne and the Salon Tuileries. In 1926, together with his brother, PF Chelishchev, C. Berard and classmates at the Academy P. Ransona held an exhibition in the gallery "Drouet," which launched the neo-romantic trend in European painting. Held solo exhibitions in galleries in Paris "Granof" (1927), "Etoile" (1928), "Bonzhan" (1929). In 1928 participated in the exhibition of modern French art in Moscow, which sent two works - "Landscape" and "Portrait of George de Chirico.

In 1930 he lived in the south of France. Created a series of fantastic landscapes with ruins. In 1936 visited the United States. He performed the monumental paintings for J. Sobi and J. Levy in New York. He has designed a music festival in Hartford (Connecticut). In 1937, appealed to the scenery, having issued the staging of "Threepenny Opera" by Brecht for the theater Etoile in Paris. In the future, many worked as a theatrical designer, performed sketches of the scenery for many productions of Russian Ballet of Monte Carlo, La Scala in Milan, the Metropolitan Opera and Ballet Theater in New York, including the ballets "What the Devil" B. Tomazini ( 1939), "Concert of Baroque Bach" (1940), "Romeo and Juliet" Diliusa F. (1943), "Giselle" A.-SH. Adana (1946), opera "Rigoletto" by Verdi, "Il Barbiere di Siviglia" by G. Rossini and others. Maintained close ties with Russian artists and dancers, has collaborated with S. Lifar, George Balanchine and others.

In the early 1940's, traveled to Italy and Switzerland. Held several solo exhibitions in galleries in Paris. In the 1932-1947 yearly arranged solo exhibitions in the gallery "Levy" in New York.

In mid-1940's, settled in the United States, in 1944, took American citizenship (in some sources - in 1937). Become well known as an author of fictional landscapes with architectural motifs. A number of studies combined the classic style of writing with deliberate inscrutability of plot and unexpected angles. In 1948 visited Mexico, has created a large series of landscapes, for which was awarded Guggenheim fellowships.

In the early 1950's had lived in Italy, in 1956 settled in Rome, where he continued to write fantastic landscapes with ruins. In 1956, released in New York album of drawings "imaginary stroll through Italy." Held a solo exhibition in Buenos Aires (1950). Since 1964 - Member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters.

Berman is one of those masters of the so-called "Russian emigre, whose work has become better known it is in Europe and America than at home. He is one of the founders of the neo-romantic style of art, which had as its aim the revival of interest in figurative painting. In his work has been influenced by "blue" and "pink" periods of Picasso, went through a passion for creativity G. de Chirico, and C. Daly.

Berman's works are in many museum and private collections, particularly in the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the Tate Gallery in London, the Museum of Modern Art in Paris, and others.
