Famous Russian battle painters . Born in Pavlovsk. He studied at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts and K. Briullov Sauerweid A. (1838 - 1944). During the study received three silver (1838, 1939), and two gold (1841 , 1842 ) medals and the title of the artist ( 1842). Retired Arts Abroad ( 1843 - 1844). From 1845 - Academy of Fine Arts. From 1842 - exhibitor in numerous exhibitions , including: the World Exhibition in Paris (1867) and Vienna (1873 ), exhibitions in Antwerp ( 1885) and Berlin ( 1886). He taught at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts ( 1848 - 1894). In 1888 received the title of Distinguished Professor. Among students - Georgia P. , N. Schilder , W. Sternberg and other famous artists. Portraits and paintings of Russian military history. A number of works devoted to the real military events in which he participated. Had a profound influence on the development of battle painting as an independent genre in Russian art.
