Outstanding Russian artist. Born into a military family, received a knighthood. In 1870 - 1871 he studied at the natural branch of Novorossiysk University in Odessa, attended lectures Mechnikov, who later became his friend. Worked independently, the advice of A. Bogolyubov. In 1876 he traveled to Italy, visiting Milan and Rome, in 1877 went to Paris. Since then, from time to time had lived in Paris (until 1904). It began to paint professionally under the leadership of the Track. TPX member since 1877, TYURH 1891, TPHV from 1905. In 1881 he received the order of the Russian government on the implementation of the nine types of panels with Bulgaria, where the battles took place during the Russian-Turkish War (1877 - 1878). In 1880, he worked in Barbizon, near Paris, in the early 1890s - in the southern and south-western France, arriving in the summer in Russia. In 1914 - 1919 he lived in Russia and Ukraine. In 1919 he went to Belgium. He took an active part in the exhibitions of Arts, MOLH, TPHV, TYURH, the Paris Salon, exhibited work in Berlin, Venice, Munich, Copenhagen. Academician and member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts from 1904. Author of landscapes, portraits, still lifes and genre scenes. Represented in the most famous museums of Russia and Europe
