Ivan Ivanovich Shishkin, one of the greatest masters of the realistic landscape painting, was born (13) January 25, 1832 in the provincial town of Yelabuga in a poor family of merchants.

In 1844 the father sent the boy to the Kazan gymnasium, where the future artist found a few friends with whom he "could draw and talk" about art.

In 1852 Shishkin, entered the Moscow School of Painting and Sculpture, where he received a good grounding. In 1856-1860 years he continues his studies at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts. Advances young artist awarded gold and silver medals. The desire for "loyalty, affinity, portrait depicted nature" is already apparent in the early work "Type in the vicinity of St. Petersburg" (1856, State Russian Museum).

In the years 1858-1859 Shishkin often on Valaam, the stark, majestic nature of which was associated with a young man's mother nature Urals. In 1860 two landscape Shishkin Valaam receives a gold medal and the right to go abroad. Shishkin travels abroad only in 1862. Berlin and Dresden did not make it impressive. Shishkin revived only in Prague. He admires the paintings, "Slavic types of" Joseph Manes, in 1863 in Zurich, he met with the technique of etching.

He soon began working in the woods near Dusseldorf. Filled with pen drawings caught the attention of many art lovers. In 1865 Shishkin returned to Russia and for the painting "View of the surroundings of Dusseldorf" (1865, State Russian Museum) is the title of academician.

Then he writes a lot of pictures with the views of the national landscape. "Chopping wood," "At Sunset", "Afternoon in the vicinity of Moscow", "Pine" and "In the wilderness" - the last in 1873 he received the title of professor.

The creative activity of Ivan Ivanovich Shishkin was completed on the majestic composition "Mast-Tree Grove" (1898, State Russian Museum), in which experience and skill of the artist expressed the indelible impressions of childhood.
