I agree with Mona, speaking on contemporary authors, the success is not always in direct proportion to the artistic value of works. In the history of art is enough examples of that.
But time puts everything in its place, almost always.

Time certainly puts everything in place, but until it comes, many manage to earn on fairly low-grade jobs. People farther, the more love kitsch and beauty. I must say that most gallerists average hand traded just that. If they come across on a decent contract artist with good preparation, they "break" him under the demand. I know many such examples from life. Alas.
 However, they all loudly insist that it is a masterpiece that will be part of the century, compose stories pictures, but this does not mean that no one sees and understands the real situation
