In recent years, attempts to censor the exhibition of contemporary art from violent reactionaries and going at them on occasion some of the authorities. Just the other day, "censors" again stepped up and trying by all means to interfere with the exhibitions at the festival "White Nights in Perm" - in particular, the personal exhibition of Vasyl Slonova, group exhibition "New Barbizon" installation Sergei Stone "Russian Baroque" and the project " Monstration in Perm. "
I would like to say in connection with what is happening their position. It consists in the fact that art in general and contemporary art in particular, are the vanguard of human culture, the key to the development of modern civilization, which is based on the ideas of progress, empirical knowledge, scientific approach to reality, freedom of conscience, of expression and opinion. Contemporary art - a kind of cultural-anthropological laboratory in which both artists and audiences to voluntarily put themselves in a situation of risk. Yes, it can provoke different feelings, have different consequences - both for their creators, and for those who are familiar with their works. However, the risk can not be achieved without anything new. Without a new meaningless existence of art, culture immersed in a situation of stagnation. Where else but in the arts for the first time a new can express yourself? After all, the territory of the museum, gallery area - it's marked territory, specially fenced from other segments of the culture and society (such as a school, popular culture, or a classic example).
During the XX century, we have experienced a cultural catastrophe of 1917, when it was disrupted the normal development of Russian culture. Only at the end of the past century, we have been able to get rid of its effects. It seemed more creative freedom does not limit any party nomenklatura, no valuation by an authoritarian state. And now, instead of what to support and further the regime of free competition between different creative areas of contemporary culture, we once again offer a "manual mode".
You can say only one thing. Contemporary art is one of the few islands of high living, creative free culture in today's Russia, the situation in which a rapidly arhaiziruetsya, reproducing reality of feudalism and satirical images of Gogol and Saltykov-Shchedrin. One of those who has consistently defended the freedom and creativity of the artist all these years in Russia, is my long-time friend and collaborator on many art projects Gelman. His educational activities in various regions of the country and, above all, in the Perm region causes resentment among those authorities, who yesterday in leather jackets NKVD were caught and executed the priests, and today as the team turned to the zealots of Orthodoxy and "traditional values." Is it because they are so hated Gelman, his projects have a ray of light in the darkness of obscurantism? What festivals and exhibitions that it organizes, awaken independent thinking, the ability to analyze reality, to question everything, to seek, to find new and surprising? It is these people are afraid of those who want to return us to the era of feudalism, serfdom to the directives of, top-down, and those who would like to see around you (and preferably under a) are not citizens, and a crowd of spineless toadies and lackeys.
If we do not want that dream come true born-again despots, let's support Marat Gelman and his face present and future of contemporary Russian art.
Let us remember that the censors, bigots always crucify those who openly proclaimed "love your enemy" or jailed those who claimed that "the earth moves." And it ... despite all their attempts, revolves.
