Biography

GOLOVIN Gratsiansky February 17, 1863 (Moscow) - April 17, 1930 (Children's Village of the Leningrad region), painter, graphic artist, set designer, artist arts and crafts. Born in the family priest. In 1872-1879 he studied Katkovskaya seminar in Moscow, where he received his initial artistic training under the guidance of D. Neradovsky. In 1881 he entered the MUZhViZ, first worked at the architectural department, in 1883 moved to the picturesque, had studied with IM Pryanishnikov, Vladimir Makovsky, ES Sorokin, PA Sorokin, Polenov. Since 1884 has also visited polenovskie drawing evening. In 1887-1888 a picturesque sketch and drawing from nature was awarded two small silver medals. In 1889 he wrote the film "Descent from the Cross, for which he received a large silver medal and was released from the school classroom with the title of the artist. In the 1880's made friends with SI Mamontov and artists Abramtsevo Circle repeatedly visited the estate in the suburban Mamontov. In 1889 he lived in Paris, to attend school F. Kolarossi where zanimadsya led ZH.-E. Blanche and J. Simon. In the early 1890's, worked for contractor AA Tomashko and carried out the interior painting. Since 1893 has participated in exhibitions and has exhibited his paintings at exhibitions TPHV (1893, 1895), the Moscow Association of Artists (1893, 1901-1902), the Moscow Art Lovers Society (1894-1898). In the 1890's, has repeatedly traveled to Italy and France. In 1897 worked at the Academy Witty by R. Collin and O. Merson. In 1898 he studied in Spain engineering ceramics. In the late 1890's he worked on a potter's factory Mamontov "Abramtzevo" for Butyrskaya Gate in Moscow. For sketches Golovin at the plant were made majolica exhibition, vases, dishes, etc. In 1900-1903 created majolica frieze "Four Seasons" and several decorative panels with mythological scenes ("Cleopatra", "nature worship", "The Adoration of the deity, "Bathing naiads", "Thirst") for the facade of the Hotel Metropol in Moscow. In 1898, together with ED Polenova designed the "Russian dining-room manor house, VV and MF Yakunchikova in Nara, near Moscow. In 1898-1900, together with Korovin, MF Yakunchikova and ED Polenova worked on the interiors of the pavilion and the Handicraft Pavilion outskirts of Russia at the World Exhibition in Paris 1900. For his work in ceramics has been awarded gold and silver medals. Since 1899 participated in the exhibitions "World of Art", from 1902 - member of the association. worked in the same journal.

In 1903 he joined the Union of Russian Artists. In 1898 was appointed as a decorative painter of the Imperial Theatres. Since 1902 the director of the Imperial Theatres VA Telyakovsky almost every year he was in Paris, traveled in Italy, the Netherlands, Austria, Belgium. In 1905, Golovin works were exhibited at the exhibition of portraits in the Tauride Palace in St. Petersburg. In 1906-1907 participated in exhibitions of Russian art, organized by Sergei Diaghilev in Paris and Berlin. In 1908-1917 worked with Vsevolod Meyerhold. In 1909-1910 designed the staging entreprise Diaghilev's Russian Seasons in Paris, including those with NK Roerich and DS Stelletskii IV created the costumes and sets for the opera "Boris Godunov" by Mussorgsky, "The Maid of Pskov" N. Rimsky-Korsakov, as well as scenery for the ballet "The Firebird" Stravinsky. In the late 1900's - early 1910's he worked in art and ceramic workshops PK Vaulina in Kikerino near St. Petersburg. In 1912 he was elected a member of the IAH. In 1913 he settled in Tsarskoe Selo near St. Petersburg. After the revolution, took an active part in the activities of the House of Arts. In 1919, exhibited their works at the First State Free Exhibition of works of art, exhibitions, theatrical-decorative art in Leningrad (1927) and Moscow (1928). Since 1926 has worked with Stanislavsky in Moscow Art Theatre, having issued the statement plays "Crazy Day or The Marriage of Figaro" by Beaumarchais P. (1927), "Othello" by W. Shakespeare (1930). In 1928 was awarded the title "People's Artist of the RSFSR. Retrospective exhibition of works Golovin took place in 1940 at the State Russian Museum in Leningrad, in 1956 - in showrooms USSR Academy of Arts in Moscow and Leningrad in 1983 and 1988 - at the State Central Theatre Museum im. AABahrushin in Moscow. Golovin - one of the most important Russian artists of the turn of XIX-XX centuries, has shown itself in various fields of art - painting, graphics, set design, ceramics. The heyday of his work had on 1900's - 1910's and is fully linked with the aesthetics of modernism, based on which the artist has managed to develop its own recognizable style. For his works, as in painting, as well as in applied art, characterized by an unusual, sometimes even excessive, decorative, colorful, exquisite graphics solutions. The favorite in the work of Golovin had ornamental plant motifs, which are abundant in the pottery on his sketches, painted panels, theatrical scenery. Works of Golovin are in many museum collections, including the State Tretyakov Gallery, State Russian Museum, Pushkin them. Pushkin, the State Central Theatre Museum im. AABahrushin and many others.
