February 26, 2010
Today at London's High Court was to understand the conflict that arose between the auction house Christie's and the former owners of paintings by Titian, Salome with the head of John the Baptist, lost millions of dollars because of admitted errors by the experts at home. The painting was found brother and sister, David Dixon and Susan Priestley in his parents' house in the village of Symington (county of Ayrshire, Scotland) 17 years ago during the harvest. Experts of the auction house Christie's felt that the work that were at that time in very bad condition, was painted by a disciple of Titian and does not represent great value. Experts also dissuade owners from further testing and cleaning cloth, because, firstly, it is expensive, and secondly, the restoration can be very damaging to the canvas. In 1994, the painting was sold at Christie's auction for 12 thousand dollars as the work of one of Titian's pupils.

But ten years later, David Dixon visited the exhibition "The Age of Titian", held in the Scottish National Gallery in Edinburgh, and saw a very similar "Salome with the head of John the Baptist. Despite the fact that the picture was clearly in better shape, he decided to make inquiries and found that it hangs in the gallery of his "Salome." During the three years before it changed ownership and got to the famous Milanese collector Luigi Kellikeru. Ironically, in order to establish the authorship of paintings, it took a very small clearance, which is not caused the painting "irreparable harm". In January 2009, became known and the real value of "Salome" is equal to 4 million pounds ($ 6 million).

Upon learning that the error estimator cost them millions, David Dixon and Susan Priestley have sued Christie's for negligent and incompetent evaluation and attribution of "Salome."

In accordance with the assessment of experts Sotheby's, the picture belongs to the late works of Venetian masters and was written by them in the 70 years of the XVI century. However, according to the director of the National Galleries of Scotland funds Aidan Weston-Lewis, attribution of the painting remains a matter of much debate. In the later period of Titian often painted together with his disciples. Nevertheless, most experts agree that the bulk of the work on a masterpiece all the same was done by a master, not his students, as well as X-ray studies show the data track.

In 2009 the painting was exhibited for sale by auction house Sotheby's in New York. Its starting price was four million dollars, but the buyer is not found.
