Alexis Grishchenko (French spelling Ukrainian named Olexa Gryshchenko) was born in Krolevec, northern Philippines, April 2, 1883 In the course of the study of philology and biology at the universities of Kiev, St. Petersburg and Moscow, he became interested in painting and he began studying at the Moscow Art School . During this period he played a significant role in the movement of modern art and established close ties with well-known art collector Shchukin and Morozov. In 1911 he went to Paris, where he met with Andre Lohse, Alexander Archipenko and Le Fokonir, after which he became an enthusiast of modern painting, and, in particular, of cubism.
In 1913 - 1914 he studied in Italy, focusing on graphics primitives. He has published several books and articles, most important of which was represented by his scientific work on the icon in relation to Western art, and also participated in today's discussions on various aspects of contemporary art.
During the revolution, Russia became a professor at the State Gryshchenko Studio of Contemporary Art in Moscow and a member of the Commission on Protection of Historical Monuments. He was invited to lead the direction of the Tretyakov Gallery, but in 1919, not wishing to become a civil servant, he ran through the Crimea to Constantinople, leaving all his paintings and other property in Moscow.

in the capital of Turkey Gryshchenko lived in extreme poverty, but never ceased to paint, and his watercolors in the period soon made his name famous in the world of painting in the twenties. He met with an American archaeologist and collector Thomas Vittnor from Boston, the restorer of St. Sophia, which has acquired 66 of his watercolors. This allowed Gryshchenko a trip to Greece, where he studied painting at Mistra, Delphi, Corinth and Olympia.
In 1921, after his arrival in Paris, 12 made it to Constantinople pictures were taken Salon d'Oton (autumn), and Fernand Leger, put them next to their own work. After a second trip to Greece Gryshchenko in 1923 and participation in an exhibition at the Byzantine Museum in Athens, the art dealer Paul Guillaume, introduced him to Dr. Barnes Zborowski, another famous Paris art dealer. Dr. Barnes Gryshchenko bought 17 paintings for his collection (now the Barnes Museum in Merion, near Philadelphia).
After 1924 Gryshchenko lived in France. In 1927, he married Mila Lilas Lavelayne de Maubeuge, and settled in Cannes, where at one time lived Renoir. During this period he has changed his style and moved from Cubism to the expressive color expression. In this case, it undoubtedly influenced the Riviera sun, sea and mountains, and its dense overlay colors and dramatic color were an expression of uncontrollable internal forces of an artist who tried to transform the nature of his own likeness.
After the exhibition in Geller Bing in 1926, Luis Vaksels wrote that "a young Ukrainian artist - colorist conquered Paris. Katia Granoff bought 24 of his oil paintings and put them in his gallery. Gryshchenko often visited Spain, Portugal, England and the Scandinavian countries, and paintings, which he brought back from these places, he has exhibited in leading galleries in Paris: Paul, William Bing, Granoff, Druot De Elissa, Vail, Bernheim - Dzheun and large rooms especially in Tulere and d'Oton (autumn) (member since 1930).
In 1937 Gryshchenko held its solo exhibition at the Ukrainian Museum in Lviv, which at that time was under the rule of Poland, which appeared his first Ukrainian - French monograph. Work Gryshchenko found in various museums and private collections, more than 300 of his works are in collections in the U.S. and Canada.
In the early sixties it became known that the pictures Gryshchenko, who were in the collections of the Museum of Ukrainian in Lviv were destroyed, as a manifestation of "bourgeois formalism", along with the works of Archipenko, Boychuk and Narbut. This fact has forced Gryshchenko bequeath a collection of 70 oil canvases and watercolor paintings, Alexis Gritchenko Foundation in New York, provided that one day they will be given to museums free Ukraine. Foundation is located at the Ukrainian Institute of America in New York, where in 1958 the artist's friends had organized a retrospective show of his work.
After 1958 Grishchenko held three exhibitions in New York and Philadelphia, the last of which occurred in 1967 in the Gallery, Peter Deytsh New York.
Grishchenko died in Vincennes, France, January 28, 1977 In addition to his books on art, published before the Revolution, Russia, Grishchenko is the author of the magazine two years in Constantinople, published in 1930 in France with 40 reproductions of his paintings, water colors.
He has written several books - memoirs, among which a number of articles describing his meetings and conversations with contemporary French artists, many of whom were his friends. Two monographs on his work in the field of art emerged in France in 1948 and 1964.
