Painter, theater and cinema. He was born in Kremenchug, Ukraine. The son of a merchant. Early lost his father (1909), spent his childhood in poverty. In 1917 - 1919 he studied at art school in Kharkiv and Kiev Academy of Arts. In 1919 - 1920 decided to go to Paris, from Sevastopol came to Constantinople, and spent a year in Turkey, which served as a model for earning artists. In 1921, without money, with the address: Cafe La Rush, arrived in Paris. He found refuge with the sculptor V. Baydarova-Polyakova, future father of actress M. Vlady. In 1922 he attended classes at the Academy Grand Sham. Since 1923 he lived in La Rush. His neighbors were Kikoin M., P. Flint, X. Sutin, later - J. Shapiro. He painted portraits, nudes, landscapes, still lifes, scenes of theatrical life, a corrida. Participated in group exhibitions of Russian artists in the Paris galleries, together with H. Sutin and P. Flint, N. Auric, V. Naidich and groups of "Beat" and "Numbers". In 1928 was among the artists of the Russian Department Exhibitions of modern French art in Moscow. In 1930 he married ballerina L. Grzhebinoy, daughter of publisher. Always accompanied by his wife on tour, he worked as a theater artist, performed the scenery and costumes. In 1936, during her American tour, held a solo exhibition in New York. In the 1930's in his entourage were artists N. Altman, X. Granovsky, L. Indenbaum, D. Ryss, L. Kozintsev, I. Puni, R. Pikelny, S. Fotinsky, poet B. Poplawski. During the Second World War, remained in Paris. Worked with pastels, so the house did not smell of paint. His workshop in La Rush "was looted paintings destroyed. In 1943, together with J. Brack, A. Derain and other painters participated in the exhibition «Intimite». In 1944 he settled in Montparnasse. Since 1946 he worked for the company "Russian Ballet", created by his wife and her sister I. Grzhebinoy. Troupe in the cities of France, visited Spain, Portugal, Sweden, Norway, Italy, repeatedly. In Paris he worked in a workshop with V. Naidich on the Boulevard Saint-Jacques, 51 (before 1974). In the postwar years had solo exhibitions in galleries in A. Maurice (1952, 1958) and Serret-Fauveau (1963, 1965, 1967, 1972), participated in group exhibitions: "La Rush" (gallery Montparnasse, 1960), "Russian Artists of the School of Paris" (House of French thought, 1961), "Russian View" (Heidelberg, 1974). Posthumously his work were presented at the exhibitions "La Rusch and Montparnasse" at the Museum Jacquemart-Andre (1978) and "Crazy Thirties" at the Grand Palace (1979). In 1984 retrospective exhibition held at Gallery Sollette Dubois. 1985 his works were exhibited at the exhibition "School of Paris Montparnasse. Puni and his circle "in the salon de la Rose-Croix. In 1980 the widow gave a number of his works in the Pushkin Museum and RM.
