Ivan Ivanovich Shishkin was born into a family of merchants. Father of the artist, IV Shishkin, was not only an entrepreneur, but also an engineer, archaeologist and local historian, author of "Stories of the city Yelabuga. Finished the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture in 1856, the future artist studied at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts (1856-60). As a pensioner of the Academy in 1862-65 lived in Germany and Switzerland, visited the studio of the Swiss landscape painter R. Koller.
