По умолчанию How to sell the bear skin

Author: Guy Abask

A group of young people agreed and teamed together to purchase works of unknown artists. Then they organized the sale at auction, which became one of the first triumphs of Picasso.

Collection "Bear Skin" was undoubtedly one of the most original early twentieth century - both in its composition, and functioning. She deserves a separate topic.

One day in 1904, several young people connected by kinship, friendship or a similarity in tastes, decided to gather a collection of paintings - in the beginning just to "decorate the walls of their homes." Most of them at that time had neither the time nor the money necessary to collect personal collection, so they decided to make it together. The idea belonged to Andre L|evelyu, a man of great culture and fine taste. Under his influence has created a partnership, the purpose of which is described in its charter the following terms:

Читать дальше...
  1. Creating a decade collection of paintings, consisting mainly of significant works of young or just beginning to use the well-known artists.
  2. Use these works under certain conditions.
  3. The sale of these works at public auction (an excerpt from the statute of 24.02.1904).

André Léveillé has agreed to become manager of the partnership. In particular, because he had more free time than other members, and he maintained relationships with young artists, he instructed the selection and purchase of artworks for the collection. Other members of the Association were Mr. George Anse, Baron de Qurna, Messrs. Robert Elissa, Elissa Morris, Jules Yunevel Jacques Léveillé and Felix Marchand, each of whom owned one share. Messrs. Emil and Maurice Level owned one share of "joint and inseparable, but with the ability to use the pictures as agreed between them" (extract from the statute). These eight shareholders soon added three more: Mr. Frederick Kombernal, Messrs. Jacques and Jean Raynal, indivisible owning one share, and finally, Mr. Edmond Raynal (additional act of the Association, undated, but probably issued in 1904 .). None of the shareholders had no right to own more than two lobes.

Modus operandi of the Association was very simple, but at the same time is quite unusual for collectors: each member of the Association undertook to pay annually 250 francs in respect of each share. Purchases made on the proposal upravlyayuschgo with the approval of the majority of Council members, consisting of three people: the very manager (who participated in the Council throughout the duration of the partnership) and two other members elected for two years. Elected and one additional member of the Council - in the case when one of the members of the Council could not take part in voting. Each year in the period between 1 st and 15 th of February in Paris convened meeting of members of the Association, which listened to record transactions in the past year, financial statements are checked and approved by the Council. As for the conditions of use works of art, it happened in the following conditions: twice a year, not later than the end of February and June, all participants convened the meeting. There are in the order determined by lot, were chosen from among those purchased paintings, which they wanted to hang at home for the duration of the duration of the partnership. Each share gave the right to one proizvedenie.Uchityvaya unequal significance of acquired products, the Council can group several paintings that were so one lot. However, since the partnership was based primarily on friendly terms, the participants could easily share pictures or lots, pre-briefed on this manager in writing.

Why collectors "Bear Skins" decided to acquire only the works of contemporary artists? They themselves have explained their choice in the foreword to the catalog of its sale: "The best works of the past have been virtually inaccessible, so members of the Association themselves, young and living with hope for the future, is easily possible to convince ourselves that we need to dovaryat young artists, as yet unknown or recently received recognition. They believed that not to be afraid of the risks associated with the acquisition of new works, more honorable than to risk buying fakes or paintings by artists with bloated reputations. They thought that it was buying the works of artists and innovators, they followed the traditions of the past, when art lovers interested in not long past, and contemporary art and the preparation of art of the future, when these fans are much more worried about the emergence of new styles, rather than classification and "mummification" of styles the past in museums.

It is very likely that this choice was influenced by André Léveillé. In any case, their choice is the more likable, that they did not have any calculation of profit: some of the members of the Association believed that the profits earned from the sale of the collection after the expiration of the duration of the partnership shall be divided between the parties (likewise, they were ready to share the losses if the proceeds from this sale was less than investment), but most of the participants refused to share the profits exclusively between themselves and suggested that part of the profits to pay the artists, almost always living in poverty. At the suggestion of Mr. Robert Elissa article of the Charter "Lee" kvidatsiya "included the following provisions: if the revenue from the sale of the collection will be lower than the total amount of contributions, each member of the Association will lose money in proportion to their participation. If revenues exceed the amount of investments, primarily to each participant will be returned to his contributions, and then the bonus, which can not exceed 3%of these contributions. If, after these payments will have the funds, 20%will be transferred to the manager as a reward for his services, 20%intended to transfer pre-selected artists, their families or associations of artists ". And indeed, after the sale of the collection of artists was transferred to 12,641.49 francs - quite a substantial amount for that time!

So going to a collection of "Bear Skin" during 10 years. Tireless Ande Level went to artists' studios and selected paintings, intended to decorate the homes of his friends. Maybe you can accuse him of some kind of eclecticism - catalog sales collection includes at least 60 names of artists of different directions and, of course, quite different values. Next to the names of Van Gogh and Gauguin, Picasso and Matisse, we see Eimlya Bernard and Maurice Denis (only without the battering, Ms. Voloviks, I am only a translator of this text!), Paul Ransona, Henri de Giroux, Filizhe etc. . or artists, whose name always remained unknown or very soon be forgotten - Jean Blatty, Albert Victor, Dyuve, Grass-Mick ... Of course, such eclecticism did not contribute to the integrity of the collection, but we must not forget that this is a private meeting and that the manager had to seek the approval of other members of the partnership. In the end, when the works were collected for the public auction, it turned out that they give a panoramic view - of course, with spaces, but very interesting - painting of the early twentieth century. That's what was said in the catalog: "Maybe someday this collection, which now exhibits collected a few days, will be regarded as a quick reference of sincere and personal search for artists of our time. However, quick reference guide - the name is too pretentious, better say that it allows you to see some of the trends of our times, an incredibly rich, diverse and fruitful.

In fact, "the bear's hide" allowed to meet soon with the art of 1904-1905. It was figured some Cubists - Picasso, Metzinger, La Fresnaye, Erben - but, except for one landscape and still life Metzinger La Fresnaye, they were all presented works, preceded by cubism. In particular, Picasso, the author of 12 paintings from the catalog, was represented by its blue and pink periods, especially favorite Andre Level. In Picasso's central position in the collection took on the one hand, works by artists of Nabi (one of the participants of the partnership were associated with them prior to 1904), on the other - paintings fauvists. Among Nabidov note Bonnard, Vuillard, Sérusier, Maurice Denis, Roussel, Odilon Redon, including Fauvism - Henri Matisse (along with Picasso's most fully represented in the collection - 10 works), Derain (4 linen and 1 figure), Vlaminck, Van Dongen, Zhirie, Vries, Mark, and Le Puy. Other well-known artists represented in the collection: Van Gogh (Flowers in a vase), Gauguin (Cellist, a portrait of M. Shneklyuda), Pizarro (Beach of Saint Catherine in Rouen, watercolor 1883), Signac, Cross, Forain, Constantin GUY ( 12 drawings), Flanders, Manga, Maillol (Portrait of a Woman), Rouault (3 watercolor 1906), Utrillo (4 landscape) and, finally, Marie Laurence (4 works, including 2 of the canvas of the best period). The most interesting part of the collection were particularly Matisse and Picasso, which was confirmed on sale at auction.

To avoid this sale was impossible - it was included in the Charter of the Association. However, many members of the Association regretted that the work will be sold. The text of the catalog could read: "We must recognize that we have acquired some works that are included in our collection, tormented by doubt, fear that our choice nepravelen. However, some participants "Bear Skins" bought at auction the works that they truly love.

Article 5 of the Charter provided at the end of 1913 the convening of the meeting, which were to be determined time and the organization selling the collection at auction. This meeting was scheduled for March 2, 1914
On February 28 the same year opened a private exhibition of works from the collection, and from 14 to 18 hours. March 1 it was open to the public. Was an excellent illustrated catalog published, distributed Bernheim-young and E. Drouet.

This sale, announcements of which appeared in January in almost all major newspapers, has become a real sensation - of course, the founders of the "Bear Skins" could not believe this. In fact, it has become a major art events in 1914 The fact that "the first time the public could see such a complete collection of contemporary art, works of artistic avant-garde, whose authors have recently considered" crazy "over which the crowd went to laugh at the Salon of Independents ( A. Varna, "Elimination of the collection of the bear's hide").

Sami auction held on March 2, 1914 in the halls of the number 7 and 8 of the Hotel Drouot, under the leadership of Mr. Henri Baudouin. This report A. Varna:

Bidding began yesterday in two hours. Chaired by Mr. Henri Baudoin. The hall was filled, and this was the audience, which is rarely seen at public auction - a lot of art dealers and art lovers. Newest painting is grazdo more interest than is commonly believed. Observed were Mr. Vollar and several German art dealers, Messrs. Tannheyzer and Gaspari from Munich, Alfred Flehthaym from Dusseldorf, Gutbir from Dresden ... There were also numerous and artists: those whose pictures were displayed for sale, their friends, the Cubists - Glez, and Metzinger, La Fresnaye, poets - Mario Meunier, Alfred Lombard, elegant dandy, who climbed to the banquette, the better to see, Max Jacob in red cape, Andre Salmon, closely followed the auction and to make notes, journalists, spectators ...

Interesting prices proldannye pictures - they give us an idea of listing of artists and their popularity. For a proper understanding of them, be aware that it was gold francs, that is, to get the value of the euro, these prices must be multiplied by 50. Works of some of the most expensive in modern times artists were sold rather cheaply, such as Bonnard, the only painting in the collection can be purchased for 720 francs., Canvas Derain went for 210, 300 and 420 francs., Dufy (160 fr.), La Fresnaye (300 fr.), Freese (from 130 to 550 fr.), Marie Laurence ( "A group of five characters" was sold for 475 francs. but still life "Scharf, flowers, fan" went for only 250 fr.) Metzinger , Cubist landscape which has not risen above 100 francs. and the other two works were sold for 80 and 55 francs., Utrillo (none of his work has not exceeded 400 fr.) Vlaminck (170 fr.) Rouault (three watercolors have been sold for 205, 180 and 170 fr.). On average, but prices were sold neunizitelnym Van Dongen, Segonzak (800 fr.) Flanders, Forain (1150, 850, 820, etc.), Puy, Vallotton, Nuits, Roussel (from 300 to 1100 fr.) Odilon Redon (two pastels to 1300 fr.) and Marche (2 landscape for 1500 and 1600 fr.). Linens Van Gogh and Gauguin were sold for 4000-4200 Fr. Cheapest painting Matisse went for 600 francs. And the rest - for 1850.2400 and even 5000 fr. Picasso's triumphant: very early "man in the cape" went for 1,350 francs. "Clown on a horse" pink period - in 2600, and "Three Dutch" in 1905 - for 5200 francs. The most expensive painting was his "family of actors" (pink period, now in the collections of the Chicago Art Institute): exhibited at an initial price of 8000 francs. It has achieved a very high price for those days in the 11500 francs. She bought a German gallerist Tannheyzer, who admitted that he "gladly would have paid nza it twice.

That is, the total amount of the sale amounted to 88,957.45 at a cost of 25000. This is approximately 356%over 10 years, or by 22,5%per annum, taking into account the fact that each year invested in 2500. Good result. It is interesting to calculate how much would it be if they sold now? It is possible, as the best option to count on Picasso, if anyone, will determine to some of his work from above.
