Vladimir Hristianovich Sause was born in St. Petersburg May 18, 1859. He was the son of academician watercolor painting Christian Fedorovich Sause - student Zichy. Childhood artist elapsed but in Moscow, where he moved with his parents in 1863.
In 1870 V.X. Sause did: in the Moscow Stroganov School, where he graduated in 1879. Its main leaders in the school were: Academician Jasinski and artist Shchyogolev. Both of these teachers have played a prominent role in shaping the tastes and artistic instincts V.X. Sause, which the artist largely stayed true to its future deyatenostn: Jasinski him toward the landscape and the work of watercolor, Shchyogolev interested in his image of the animal world.
At the end of the Stroganov School V.X. Sause is engaged in educational work in secondary schools: first in Dubno, then from 1881 - in the city of Mykolayiv. In 1885 he moved to Odessa, and there runs all his further activities.
From 1885 but in 1920 V.X. Sause teaches at the Commercial High School, and from 1920 invited the leaders of graphic faculty of the Odessa Art Institute, where he worked until 1931, then retire, leaving a teaching job.

Art Activity V.X. Sause begins immediately after the exercise: to the 90 years he worked exclusively as a watercolorist at the exhibition watercolors. In the future, the artist leaves watercolors, but at the forefront of his activities as an engraver. Etching V.X. Sause started in Odessa in 1890-1891 gg. under the influence of the artist Vyacheslav Koreneva, who taught him the first general information on the technique of etching. With all their further development, however, V.X. Sause obliged himself, tirelessly working on the study of the works and the creative methods and techniques of the best engravers. Crucial for him was meeting with two prominent Russian engravers-realists: landscapes II Shishkin and engraver VV Mate, the first he met in the 1895-1896 city, with the second-in 1911-1912, and both masters helped V.X. Sause his advice, presented him with new techniques and manners of etching, contributed to its wider and deeper understanding of the challenges facing the engraver. Without limiting the studied experience of the Russian engravers V.X. Sause many studies of the best masters of the West. With special attention, he analyzes the work of old masters: Rembrandt, Goya and modern masters of etching: Rops, Whistler, Brengvina, Zorn and others. Developing the experience of Dru ¬ gih artists and all the latest achievement in the field of engraving B. X. Sause worked hard to deepen this experience by going through this individual and many people find themselves.
B. X. Sause began with a simple bar-etching, to achieve greater diversity and gradations of tones to light, he used the re-etching etching needle or the work of different thickness. These landscape etchings "The road in the woods" in 1902 and "Noon" in 1901, however, soon the wizard does not satisfy the constraints of a simple etching, he seeks to introduce the richness of a variety of etching a manner that consistently and successfully masters. Gradually he introduced "manners": aquatint, metstsotinto and soft ground. V.X. Sause not only applies to each of these manners alone, but combines them in a single etching, giving them a variety of combinations ( "Volta Fountain" in 1910 - etching and aquatint. "Chickens", 1918 - aquatint and drypoint, "Oak" 1927 - soft ground, drypoint and aquatint). The most difficult technique of etching is Chumak, which applied: etching, soft ground, aquatint and metstsotinto.
Enrichment facilities in B. X. Sause is inextricably linked to the deepening of the ideological and imaginative solutions to their works. Its basic plot motifs remain the landscape and the image of animals: but the approach to addressing these themes the artist is doing false and profound evolution.
The first of his landscapes still completely filled with features of early watercolors, academic, not deprived of naturalism, monotonous in form and composition. A careful study of the greatest works of Russian landscapes I. Levitan, and the best masters of Western realist landscape: the French "barbizontsev and impressionist painter opens eyes to nature, the value of heartfelt lyrical perception of nature. He begins to understand that to achieve characteristic shape, enrich the landscape lives in motion. Thus, his landscape etchings are becoming more picturesque, the space in these deeper, more varied and original composition becomes more complex and richer than the play of light and shadow, beautiful to the finer nuances and color spots, and their contrasts and halftones. Gradually the artist expands the thematic range of his works, drawn to the themes of collective village, socialist production and, finally - the portrait. The biggest success he achieves in his series of portraits of shock and Stakhanovites village, artists and public figures. This is mainly the head of a large size, made in the manner of a dry needle or soft enamel. The portraits of a lot of expression and given a significant response ( "Drummer Volkov" - drypoint, "Portrait of the sculptor Yakovlev, soft ground, etc.).
In addition to etching and its varieties B. X. Sause works in other techniques, engraving, owning them as in perfect. He works in colored linocuts, lithographs and monotypes. In all these areas he has made a number of improvements, and such manners as "gum arabic" or multicolored stencil are his own inventions. He also worked a lot over to Improve ¬ vaniem monotypes, seeking its multiple print runs.
B. X. Sause participated extensively in the overall artistic life, was an active participant in artistic organizations and has exhibited his works at exhibitions. Since 1900, he exhibited watercolors at exhibitions in Moscow and Leningrad and in the exhibitions of the Odessa T-wah Southern Russian artists. Since 1894, he became a member of the T-va. From 1925 to 1929 he was exposed to exhibitions of the Art O-va im. KK Kostandi, and from 1927 to 1939 in all Ukrainian and All-Union exhibitions.
Along with artistic activities V.X. Sause spent much pedagogical work. Invited in 1920 in Odessa Art Institute, he organizes the graphic arts department and teaches a number of talented Soviet graphs (Kovturman, Gust, Bolle, Grinstein, David, Grabbe and others).
Merits V.X. Sause were marked by the party and government: in 1930 he was promoted to professor in 1939 - he was awarded the Shevchenko Jubilee Medal. A large number of his best works acquired for the state museums. Etchings, linocuts and watercolors V.X. Sause are in the Odessa Museum of Russian and Ukrainian arts, museums and artistic ¬ nom Institute of Kiev, in Ukrainian picture gallery, in Kharkov, in the Russian Museum and the Museum of the Academy of Fine Arts in Leningrad, in museums: Yerevan, Mariupol, Dnepropetrovsk, Kherson, Tiraspol, and t . e.
B. X. Sause died on 26 June 1939. Government and public art series of measures to perpetuate the memory of the master and facilitate in-depth study of his creative heritage: Ukrainian publishing house "Art of" produced an extensive monograph on the wizard, and an album of his works, the Odessa Board of the Union of Soviet Artists, organized etching studio them.
