Nikolai Ivanovich Kulbin (1868-1917) was born in Helsingfors (Helsinki). In 1895 he defended his thesis for a doctorate in medicine in 1905-1917 served as assistant professor of the Military Medical Academy in St. Petersburg. In parallel with the service Kulbin participated actively in the artistic life of St. Petersburg.
