William Hammershey was born into a wealthy merchant family . Talent for drawing at Hammersheya opened early and encouraged by their parents. Studied drawing with 8 years, in 1876-1885 he studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. At the World Exhibition in Paris in 1889 in the Danish pavilion 4 paintings were exhibited Hammersheya .

In 1891, the artist married Ida Ilsted , then newlyweds go on their honeymoon in Germany , France, Italy and England. During a trip to Germany in Dusseldorf Hammershey met with the famous German poet Rainer Maria Rilke, who subsequently visited the artist in Copenhagen.

Now William Hammershey is one of the most famous artists in Scandinavia , his work is represented in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris and the Guggenheim Museum in New York. In 2008, the Royal Academy in London, the first major exhibition of his work in the UK , "William Hammershey : Poetry of Silence ."
