Moscow Biennale in crisis

The third Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art will open on Sept. 24, 2009. The number of artists-participants of the third Moscow Biennale may be reduced because of the crisis and the lack of budget, said in an interview with RIA Novosti Biennale curator of the main project "Against Exclusion", Jean-Hubert Martin, the famous ex-director of the French Arts Center Pompidou.
Earlier Ministry of Culture told RIA Novosti that the Moscow Biennale, which opens on September 24, 2009, allocated 65 million rubles.
"It is possible that we abandon some of the authors or works, and a list of the main project, which claimed 80 artists from 25 countries - Russia, Europe, USA, Asia, South America, Africa and Oceania, could be reduced," - said Martin .
According to him, now run the calculations the cost of transportation or production work. "Some authors will be invited to come at their own expense, but if they refuse, then we lose them" - added Martin.
But as he continued, despite the crisis, the Biennale will bring together a work of world famous stars.
"Now the list is still being debated, but we already know that will come to British Artists Chapman Brothers, who will bring their new work - painting and sculpture from the carcasses of animals. Indian by Anish Kapoor, I hope, will provide an amazing installation - a maze through which visitors must pass, to see in the center column of smoke emerging from the floor and disappearing into the sky. There will also be sculptures of Erwin Wurm, video Marina Abramovic and other works "- he explained.
"Martin confessed that he would like to see the exhibition turned out with high intellectual potential, but it did not seem abstruse and would have been understandable and untrained viewers.
