Russian painter who worked in the genre of landscape painting . He studied at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts (1854 - 1857) in the classes F. Bruni and S. Vorobyov. In 1857 and 1859 received a gold and silver medal in 1859 - the title of the artist. Retired St. Petersburg Academy of Switzerland (1857 - 1863) , was frequently in the Crimea , Finland, often came to Ukraine. From 1864 - academician, since 1876 - professor of landscape painting , and taught at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts. Created a large number of works based on travel. He became famous as a good colorist. Landscapes master bought P. Tretyakov, now kept in the Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum and private collections.
