Pavel Mikhailovich Tretyakov was born December 27, 1832 in Moscow in a merchant family. Learned to read and write at home, and when grown up, he helped his father in the trade. On account of the creation of Paul Cotton mills, which he opened with his brother.

The collection grew rapidly, and soon took her to a separate room. Tretyakov building built in 1874, and after seven years of gallery was open to the public. And soon the Tretyakov gave the entire collection and building of the Moscow City Duma.

Maecenas was a life trustee of the gallery, until his death on December 4, 1898.
