Savva Mamontov was born (3) October 15, 1841 in the remote town of Trans-Ural Yalutorovsk Tobolsk province in which they lived was once exiled Decembrists. The family Savva Mamontov was the fourth son.

His father, Ivan, has gone from a provincial merchant to the top of Moscow's business, and in 1853 was elevated to the hereditary honorary citizenship.

Sawa was in the St. Petersburg Mining Institute, then at the law faculty of Moscow University. Rich in railroad construction, was the principal shareholder of the Moscow-Yaroslavl-Arkhangelsk Railway, Nevsky mechanical plant associations and societies of the East Siberian iron-mills.

Lived for several years in Italy, where he was singing, he studied painting and sculpture. And everywhere was the star pupil. But the main talent Savva Ivanovich was "to find talent." In the 1870-1890 years of his estate near Moscow became the center of fiction Abramtsevo of the capital.

Thanks to him, the world learned of such great artists as Korovin, Serov, Vrubel and many others. Thanks to his help came to light many of the sculptures and paintings by Russian artists, who later masterpieces.

Savva Mamontov is also the founder of Russian opera - the very one in which the genius blossomed Chaliapin, and where they were delivered (in some cases for the first time), many of the opera "national school". Mammoths and musicianship became synonymous in Moscow.

In the late 1890s, a series of Mammoth went financial trouble, his case shattered, and brought to trial for alleged embezzlement, jailing. The famous lawyer defending Plevako Mammoth in court, witnesses spoke of him only good things, but investigators determined that Sawa is not appropriated money. Mamontov was acquitted by the jury.

Estate of Savva Mamontov was sold to pay debts, many valuable works have gone into private hands. Mammoth has lost money and reputation and was no longer able to do business. But the rest of his life Savva Mamontov retained a love for art and appreciation of friends - artists.

Savva Mamontov died (March 24) April 6, 1918 and was buried in Abramtsevo.
