Paul Pelio famous French Orientalist (1878-1945), graduated from the French Far Eastern School in Hanoi. In the 1899-1900 years was sent to Beijing for the ancient manuscripts and fell under the Boxer Rebellion, during which up arms to defend as manuscripts and religious mission, for which he was awarded the Legion of Honor. In 1906-09 he was on an expedition to Tibet, where he managed to get a lot of ancient manuscripts. By agreement between Russia and the French foreign ministries, mission Pelio was supposed to serve the purposes of exploration in Tibet, for which the mission was included ethnographic group led by Carl Mannerheim. The latter was chosen as having the skills orientalist, was familiar with Pelio, and, strictly speaking, was not a Russian ... for the protection of the expedition in the wild steppes was isolated ... a small detachment of Cossacks, who was involved in ethnographical research in Tibet until 1907, when an agreement on the partition of Persia between Russia and Britain, he went to further research the way and arrived in 1908 in Beijing ...
