Gurdjieff himself became a composer almost by accident. While thronged to him artists, writers and musicians, he often spoke disparagingly about self-expression, characteristic of Western art. After the revolution of Gurdjieff emigrated with his disciples. Thomas de Hartmann was born in Ukraine in 1885, he studied at the St. Petersburg Conservatory (piano class Yesipova, composition - Arensky, counterpoint - Taneyev). His ballet "Red Flower" was made at the Imperial Opera House with Nijinsky (the composer was 21 years old.) Hartmann was close to Scriabin and shared his belief that the higher a person's ability can awaken and develop musical means. After meeting with Gurdjieff in St. Petersburg in 1916, he felt that he found a teacher capable of giving him a spiritual foundation. For 12 years, Hartmann followed Gurdjieff - from Russia to the Caucasus, then to Turkey, and from there - to Germany and France.

In 1919, Gurdjieff sent him to Yerevan, where Hartmann played works of the great Armenian composer Komitas philosopher whose influence is evident in his own music. Hartmann spent 11 years wandering in the former Ottoman Empire, recording folk songs and studying the parallels between the spiritual and secular music, trying to find the origins of the pre-Christian Armenian church music.

Travel to Yerevan was the direct contact with the Hartmann "clean" Armenian folk music and instruments, and gave him the opportunity to better understand how Gurdjieff imagined writing, and execution of the music.

In the book "Our Life with Gurdjieff" Hartmann describes the difficulties that followed his attempts to record the music of Gurdjieff.
