The exhibition will feature the best pictures from the museum's artist-organizers of the event, as well as the best-known works from private collections.
For the first time will be exhibited paintings from the collection of the artist's family and rare archival materials, documents and personal belongings of the artist. All this, according to the organizers, should create a unique atmosphere where not only the picture of Peter Konchalovsky, but also shaped and transformed the whole direction of Russia's painting of the first half of the twentieth century.

Today, 28 March, the Benois Wing of the Russian Museum opens exhibition of the famous Russian artist Petr Konchalovsky (1876-1956). The exhibition presents about 120 paintings and drawings from the collections of museums, organizers and private collections. New Paintings from the Collection of the artist's family, rare archival materials, documents and personal belongings of the master.

A special emphasis in the exposition of the exhibition is on the 1910's, when Konchalovsky was a member of the famous art of association "The Knave of Diamonds" (1910-1917), whose main task is to update the easel painting based on a kind of synthesis of Plastic discoveries of the French post-impressionism and the traditions of Russian folk art. Konchalovsky's keen interest to the works of such masters as Cezanne, Gauguin, Van Gogh and Picasso, is reflected in a series he created in the 1910's, still lifes, landscapes and portraits. These works differ in degree of conventionality in the interpretation of a real motive, but always retain a sense of high scenic culture, inherent and later works Konchalovsky. Along with the powerful, expressive stylistics of post-impressionist paintings and the Cubists, another source of distinctive painting style of the artist becomes the art of Protorenessansa, with whom he visited during a trip to Italy in the early 1910's.
In the post-revolutionary decade, the mainstream creative pursuit Konchalovsky was associated with a consistent development of the heritage of the old masters and the traditions of Russian realistic painting of the XIX century. This is reflected in the created in 1920 "the Novgorod cycle, as well as portraits and still lifes before the war. Prominent place is occupied by self-portraits and portraits of family and friends of the artist, where the characteristics can be shaped to accentuate the sound as optimistic and tragic tone (the famous portrait of Meyerhold created shortly before the death of the great film director). The postwar works Konchalovsky showed that by the end of his life he maintained the independence of the creative positions, which generally coincides with the main trend of development of Soviet art 1920-50-ies and yet retain continuity with a plastic conquests of the Russian avant-garde early twentieth century.

 The exhibition was prepared jointly with the Pyotr Konchalovsky, and the State Tretyakov Gallery with the support of the RF Government and the Ministry of Culture of Russia.

The exhibition will run until June 2010.
