По умолчанию EUGENE BUKOVETSKY Iosifovich

Like almost all artists of Odessa, Odessa Bukovetsky finished drawing school, entered the Academy of Arts, but soon left her and went to complete their education in Paris and Munich. In Odessa, he returned in 1891 and from then on continuously participated in exhibitions in southern Russian artists, and in 1894, together with Nilus became the author of the statute of the Association. Suffice it off, Bukovetsky was not bound by the need to work on an order or to teach, moreover, sometimes acted as a patron. Thus, the issuance of commemorative exhibition catalog V TYURH was carried out at his own expense.

In 1919 Bukovetsky in his home on the Princely, 27, opened an art studio, though short-lived.
In the 20-ies. he became one of the founders of the Art Association. K. Kostandi. And since 1937, began teaching at the Odessa Art College. He has written hundreds of portraits of his fellow citizens, so that it can rightly be considered a portrait of all of Odessa.

Interesting memories of Bukovetskom left
VN Muromtseva-Bunin (Life Bunin. Conversations with memory. - Moscow, 1989).

1898
"From this year he (IA Bunin) arises friendship with the Odessa artists, who in 1890 formed the" Association of South Russian Artists ", the most glory shall have been Kostandi.

He began to attend dinners Bukovetskogo, who, being a wealthy man, arranged a feast, but invited only men. Dinners are weekly on Thursdays. To them is fun, noisy, casually; table near Bukovetskogo different subtlety and originality - the fish was served to the soup. Bukovetsky, refined man, intelligent, with great taste, tried to be all fine. He painted portraits. One thing it was acquired by the Tretyakov Gallery ( "The rich cousin. 1891. Acquired by PM Tretyakov in 1892 by the author).

1902
"He used it (Bunin) at meetings of artists. Bukovetsky was married, he lived in a lovely mansion in princely and not so often took his friends and acquaintances. Artists have decided to continue its" Thursday "and collected on these days in restaurant. They chose a restaurant Dodi, where the second floor was a large parlor, where he stood the entire length of the room table. They laid on him the entire length of their albums, and drew each other once they were served dinner, hearty, with plenty of wine , each paid for themselves.

Sause sat for pyanino. Nilus with Kurowski often sang duets, were both musicians, both had a pleasant voice. Bunin told, was all in the faces, and sometimes, when he was particularly lively and fun, dancing. Each showed their talent. Women are rarely invited. Female Odessites ever, but visitors are sometimes allowed. I have been at these dinners, when we stayed in Odessa - all our journey, wherever we kept the road began and ended in Odessa. All participants "Thursday" strongly liked these friendly gatherings.

1909
"Bukovetsky was above average height, slim, moderately thin, with regular features, with wavy brown hair. He had a very fragile health in youth with severe headaches and prolezhival in a dark room for days on end. He was a man with great taste and to quirks, with a strict distribution of the day. He was two years ago suffered a heavy drama: his wife divorced him and married his nephew. (Fedorov in the novel "Nature" took his prototype for the hero and predicted the divorce.) Now he lived one, but all my free time from work and all sorts of personal affairs - his leisure - he shared with Peter Alexandrovich Nilus, with whom he lived in the most tender friendship.

In the writings of portraits and daily playing the piano in the evenings, Bukovetsky nothing is no longer engaged (Peter Alexandrovich Nilus conducted all his affairs). He has at the very top of the house was a beautiful studio, carpeted, with comfortable furniture and a huge window above the couch. In this studio was a lot of icons, which he collected - all their circle of fascinated antikvarstvom.

Bukovetsky, "the enemy general, all of Odessa's wives", is very highly friendship hosted by the Men's dinners on Sundays, gave me attention. He spoke little, briefly, but accurately. We rode through the best streets of Odessa through Marazlievskuyu and French Boulevard to the sea. They left the crew, a little stroll. Everything was decorous, for the premeditated program. Then he went to dinner at the prince, where Bukovetskogo a tenement house, but for himself he built a house in two floors, with great taste and convenience.

Riding up to him, we went to high main entrance doors. I was struck by the lobby: on the wall hung a huge panel in green tones. Immediately there was a long kinking sofa in front of him - a table with high lamp.

The host led us up the wide staircase with beautiful dark brown wooden railing. A two-storey mansion Bukovetskogo inside was all trimmed with dark wood. With spacious grounds a small door led to the balcony, next is a cozy living room and a huge studio - almost the whole wall window on the north - with his easel, frame, and several portraits. In this house was, and art gallery with works of master and local artists. They were mostly sketches. But I did not have time to read this time with the pictures.

All the rooms were very high and spacious. We went downstairs, and Bukovetsky showed me his room and bedroom. And I never thought that in these rooms we live in a decade.

1910
"In Odessa, it was a pleasure to live. We met with the artists. They are still staged three times a week" stag ": Sunday - at Bukovetskogo, Thursday - at a restaurant, Dodi, and on Saturdays - from someone from the circle of friends. There then could attend and mistress of the house. I was already less disturbed, maybe because I was more busy: set about the French language, hoping to do translations and went to the sessions to Bukovetskomu - he wrote to me in a velvet coat and fur hat (taken from upper part of the portrait I have one). (The portrait is located in Orel, the Museum of Turgenev).

Conversations were difficult, had to stand for long periods, but with Bukovetskim was always interesting. He was able to hold their nature, and it does not stop him from writing.

He aptly described their friends and acquaintances. About his relationship with Nilus said:
- We're linked very long chain and can sometimes far away from each other, but it never tear. It is necessary and in family life - not interfere with each other, and after rushing to return home. "

Bukovetskim gathered an extensive collection of paintings, many of whom are of South Russian artists. Interesting information about the composition of this collection contains a note Zolotova art critic in the newspaper "Odessa leaf"
on October 17, 1916: - "It is interesting to say a few words about the workshop EI Bukovetskogo, which at the same time is a valuable gallery of paintings. It is one of the richest private collections of paintings in Odessa.
Unfortunately, the general public visiting this gallery is not available.
This gallery has collected the best examples of French modern art, many here also works and Russian masters.
Among the paintings by French artists here you can see pictures of Aman-Jean, Taulova (Taulou), I. Adler, Maurice; from Russian: design (optional) Polenova famous painting of "Christ and the Sinner", Serov, Ap. Vasnetsov, Repin (Portrait of An. Vasnetsova), Dvornikova, Kostandi and friend. Many paintings by old masters XVI, XVII and XVIII centuries. Collected EI Bukovetskim not only paintings, but also very valuable Italian ceramics XVII century, of great interest in terms of forms and combinations of colors, then the samples of Japanese art, as well as ancient Greek vases. There is a small collection of antique prints and tapestries of high artistic value.

After the death Kostandi in 1921 a committee was formed to perpetuate the memory of the artist.
Proposal Bukovetskogo on the organization of the Company. KK Kostandi was supported by pupils and friends Kyriakos Konstantinovich. Thanks to the efforts of this committee a year later at the grave of the deceased was erected monument. This is a simple base made of polished gray granite, placed on the granite steps, and screwed it on top of the four brass screws polished white marble plaque with a brief inscription: "Academic art Kyriakos K. Kostandi 1852 - 1921.

On our second Christian cemetery, on the left side of the temple, next to each other are now former friends-artists, teachers and students, some of the brightest representatives and the founders of the southern Russian school.

After marriage Bukovetskogo (1902), "Thursday" began to settle in the restaurant "Dodi"
My wife was almost 20 years younger Bukovetskogo, and gave birth to a daughter Ira.
Even before the revolution, the wife with another man and a child immigrated to France, taking with him a few portraits (Self-portrait Bukovetskogo, a portrait of his wife, the portrait of a daughter and a few other works). Nilus then wrote Bukovetskomu that he saw his daughter that she had grown up and studying at the Sorbonne, and her eyes Bukovetskogo. Sam Eugene Osipovich suffered greatly after the departure of his first wife.
Then daughter Irina went to Canada, and after her death, a letter arrived that the portraits that were taken away before the revolution to return to Odessa. This is her will.

This sale was held in Paris in January 1997? Or were others? Please tell us.
Yes, somewhere in that time. Commissioner of the winners Chamberland, Giafferi, Doutrebent. Then it was combined sketch, and then they split. Now there is only Giafferi. Will I lose the documentation from those trades, and from whom she is now unknown. Meticulous historian still could try to search.

Actually there is nothing to tell. Directory was not, perhaps, that the list of lots for buyers, too. Works sold a lot. Felt that the artist meticulously and carefully store any pocherkushku, gets out of his hands, no throwing, not destroyed. Failed or unfinished things are not scraped off and not gloss over, but preferred to write on the reverse side of the canvas or cardboard. Quite a lot of sketches especially the small size were unsigned, some of them, then came across in the most unexpected places already signed.
Several portraits of unknown people on both sides of cardboard, some not finished.
Many still-lifes. Real art among all this abundance there was nothing at all.
We bought mostly by professionals, the French marshal, not knowing the artist - just for variety. Inquisitive eye can still find among the many boutiques deposits something with the sale.

Trade Organization has helped close to the heirs of Russian Parisian artist Alia Rehbinder. I think she was associated with various organizations in Russia, in particular, with the museum IA Bunin in Orel, for the acquisition of some of the lots. I do not know whether her efforts were crowned with success.

Nilus in exile had to survive. In those days in Europe prevailed crisis. He is only three times pawned his watch, but no - the third time going, but the buyer turned up at work. Four heavy alternated good enough sales. Completely withdrawing from the academic, he dabbled in different directions. His goal then became to find the style that would "sell". A certain period, he wrote in large quantities, watercolors, they were in demand. He began to paint portraits, some bought with pleasure, customers were satisfied, others did not work - they were left. Hence, a considerable number of "failed" works. Nilus was in search of ...

По умолчанию Michael (Moses) Feferkorn

The name of the artist Michael Feferkorna (1889-1914) today said little even to specialists. A boy from a poor family decided to become an artist and enrolled in 1902 at the Odessa Art College and in 1909 finished it, continued his studies at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts.

Another student of the art school in autumn 1908 Feferkorn first showed at the XIX Exhibition Association of South Russian artists sketches and drawings. The first appearance in public works Feferkorna not gone unnoticed. Critic "Odessa Gazette" Ted, for example, devoted a whole paragraph novice in his review on October 5, 1908. Can not call this a review of praise. But it is important that the reviewer gives a transcript of a blank list of works in the exhibition catalog. And if the jury southern Russian artists at the exhibition had drawings and sketches amateur painter - perhaps, they deserve it: "That's why I can not understand - this is mania maestoso Feferkorna! & Ratings whole baker's dozen, 13 pieces, and all are an insignificant drawings even an entire frame of the outline: a tree branch, leaves, stem, this is very strange. What exactly are the city Feferkorn? Such mastitis celebrity that one stroke of his pen is appreciated by amateurs! I'm surprised the jury of the exhibition to take such work into exhibition. Perhaps these seeds of genius and talent of the artists are interesting, but they do not want the public ".

In St. Petersburg Feferkorn studied painting in poverty. A further three exhibited by Southern Russia, a student at the Academy. In the summer of 1914, before the last course at the Academic give ill and returned home in Odessa. As it turned out to die. In "Little Odessa News, August 11, 1914 appeared modest ad:" My father, brother, sister inform with deep sorrow the death of Misha Feferkorna ... " His death passed almost unnoticed, even South Russian artists, who at the beginning of the war tore annual autumn exhibition, in no way paid tribute to departed artist. Only a year later, in October-November 1915, when the XXV periodic exhibition of the Association of South Russian artists were shown ten etudes Feferkorna, the personality of the artist and his work interested. Several sketches were purchased from the exhibition by local collectors, a strict critic Nicholas Skrotskii wrote about the "joy of life", there is in these works. In Odessa the press came the belated publication of responses to the death Feferkorna. Leo Kamyshnikov, journalist and art critic, while the editor of "Southern Thought" in Odessa, intended to even arrange a posthumous exhibition of the artist. Unfortunately, the exhibition never took place, most likely due to financial difficulties. Four of the M. Ya Feferkorna stored in the Odessa Art Museum, something left in private collections. But the fate of most of the legacy of this is undoubtedly a talented artist, unfortunately, is unknown.

ARTISTS AND FRAMES
(Southern Gazette. Odessa, 1915, N 4)

Surova fate of the artist Moses Yakovlevich Feferkorna. Fate gave him talent, but led to a half-starved existence. She lit in the heart of a poor Jewish boy striving to art, to painting, made him deeply believe in its future, but when it turned up when behind the eagle's wings have grown, death came and stopped the poor heart of the dreamer-artist.

Feferkorn died at 25 year of his life in August last [1914] year of a heart attack when he was already in the final year of the Academy of Arts ...

His death went unnoticed. And when opened in early October of the current exhibition of paintings by artists of the South Russian society, all interested in sketches of unknown Feferkorna.

His "Park", "Rumyantsev park and sketch" On the Volga, talking about a big and sensitive master of the brush. These studies clearly highlighted at the exhibition and the public around them is a long time. As his talent Feferkorn landscape. /.../Feferkorn left behind many valuable works. All his canvases are stored in a large basket, which the artist before his death brought his parents. This basket brother of the late, before you go to the theater of war, delivered by a local artist KK Kostandi. (The late Feferkorn was the favorite pupil of the artist).

When the exhibition opened Kostandi provided all of the cart at the discretion of the jury. But the exhibition was made just ten etudes Feferkorna, and only because they were ... within ...

/.../Pekerjaan Feferkorna, among other things, interested in local journalist LM Kamyshnikov. Upon request, the Secretary of the society in southern Russian city of artists Stilianudi ordered to deliver from the pantry basket with works Feferkorna. There, over a thousand works. Many of them are of great value.

We managed to view only a few sketches, and they were brighter and stronger than those that were exhibited.

- Why these works are not exhibited? - Unwittingly broke question. And Mr. Stilianudi we said:

- Ram no. A book we have no means ...

When the ways of art insurmountable obstacle grow frame is not it sad? And do not close it art, bound in a frame?

* * *

/.../... I saw the situation in which grew and died young talented artist.

Suburbs (Myasoedovskaya str.). The cellar, filled with pickled cucumbers and watermelons - are selling old Feferkorny.

Above the cellar - a small room. One corner of it littered with rotten watermelons, prepared for the Salk. In another - huge drums with borscht. In the back of the room - bed, wardrobe, chests and table. Stale, putrid air ...

Academy of Arts has sent the elderly Feferkornam groboobrazny box with the academic work of the deceased. And the old man Feferkorn, deploying a huge canvases on the dirt floor, with a sigh, said:

- This is my son drew ...

Voice trembled. Then the old man pointed to a wooden bed.

- At her he died ... He arrived Saturday night from Tver province. He lived there for Academic give ... I said quietly: "Daddy, I'm finally home ..."

That night he died of a heart attack.

Poor Jewish boy, after endless ordeal came to my home to die on his father's bed ...

По умолчанию Poor Jewish youth came to his home to die on his father's bed ...

* *

По умолчанию fragment reviews on XXV exhibition TYURH

MY MOVIE
(detail review of the XXV exhibition TYURH. South thought, 1915, October 13.)

At an exhibition in southern Russian artists draw attention to themselves work Feferkorna.

If you look at these works, without knowing the author, it is possible to draw a picture of a brilliant future career gifted and powerful artist.

But Feferkorna no longer alive. And what is in the exhibition is the swan song of the talented young man.

Feferkorn died last year, caught cold on the academic cottage. Petrograd Academy has its own cottage in the province of Tver, where young artists go in the summer "for etudes".

There was also late Feferkorn. Disease sent him home, and returned to Odessa to die, he lived in his native city only one day.

He left a lot of work. And the debt of his fellow-artists - not to allow these works to perish.

To me came Feferkorna father, poor man, all the funds wasted on the formation of a son. Now he dreams of one thing:

- Collect a small amount of money and erect a monument at the grave of her son.

The deceased young man was not an ordinary man. It burned a spark of genuine talent. This is borne out even those few works that are available at the exhibition.

And what little they could do for his artists, will be only just paying homage to young talent, died officially from heart disease. And actually, I suppose, from malnutrition. Diseases, very, very common among the young champions of art.
