To date, the historical genre painting was probably one of the most debatable. In light of our time, things of bygone days become the objects of grave verbal battles, and any work of art associated with the personalities of national history is likely to be interpreted ambiguously. Contemporary artists are seldom resolved to devote work to this theme, at the risk of being branded as political. It is therefore important to protect and study the preserved works devoted to the events of our history.
In 2010, marks 20 years since the death of a famous Soviet battle-Ivan S. Petrov (October 7, 1924 - July 3, 1990) and the 415 birthday of Bogdan Khmelnitsky (December 27, 1595 - August 4, 1657) . The names of these figures relates the story a historical picture of Bogdan Khmelnitsky and Polish ambassadors "Petrova, written in 1954

Despite current debates on the events peasant and Cossack rebellion 1648-1657 years. April 18, 1648, was elected Hetman Khmelnitsky Zaporozhian. During the uprising he was negotiating with the Crimean Khan Islam-Gira, Polish King Jan Kazimierz, established diplomatic relations with the Swedish King Charles X, the Turkish Sultan Mehmed IV, the Russian tsar Alexei Mikhailovich. In January 1654 in Pereyaslavl held pleased, which was announced by the need to join one of the four centers of power: the Crimean Khanate, the Ottoman Porte, Poland or Russia, the latter was preferred. In the years 1654-1655. were renewed military action against Poland by Russia and Sweden, and from 1657 - also from Transylvania. In 1654, the Polish King Jan Kazimierz sent an embassy to Khmelnytsky in order to enlist its support, but Hetman deviated from the negotiations. This event was the basis of the picture of Bogdan Khmelnitsky and Polish ambassadors "Ivan S. Petrov (1924-1990), became a diploma at the end of his training at the Kiev State Art Institute.
The painting was preceded by a long preparatory period, during which the artist had to become acquainted with the extensive diplomatic correspondence, household and rifle collections of ethnographic museums, reflecting the period of peasant and Cossack rebellion. Serious interest of the young artist in the historical past, its voodushev ¬ tion, opened the doors to academic institutions and museum collections, where the artist worked on a par with historical ¬ rikami, with the only difference being that instead of records, making sketches in your sketchbook. Collection of materials has continued for over a year, during which Petrov carefully worked narrative for future work: the actors, characters, historical costumes. In his masterful sketches made evident is the inherent quality of the draftsman and painter, as the attention not only to the psychological characteristics of the characters of the future picture, but the details of arms, furnishings and fittings. Unfortunately, at this moment for the audience acquainted with this work can only be based on sketches and black and white reproductions. According to documents Kanevsky Art Institute, the picture of Bogdan Khmelnitsky and Polish ambassadors "was transferred to Kanevsky art museum, but museum is not confirmed, and the fate of the paintings remains unknown.
Its creator, Ivan S. Petrov was born Oct. 7, 1924 Childhood and adolescence Kozlovsky passed in Raisin Kharkiv region, where the future artist acquainted with the work of landscape painter Sergei Ivanovich Vasilkovskaja (1854 - 1917) and battle-Nikolai Semenovich Samokysha (1860 - 1944) . At the same time developed an interest Petrova in the historical past of the country, which became the foundation of a realistic painting of the future artist and historian.
In 15 years, Petrov entered the Kharkiv Art College, but history has made its own corrections education, the war has influenced all his work and the battle genre was chosen not by chance. During World War II he was conscripted as a youth of premilitary age and sent to Stalingrad, where he worked as a turner at the Stalingrad factory "Red October". Later tommy gunner Stalingrad Fighter Desktop Battalion, and from 1943 - the gunner gun medium tanks. In the same year he was seriously wounded. After recovering, enjoying a rare fourth blood group, the young man to remain at the donor hospital orderlies. In 1945, with the base hospital came to Berlin, was awarded the Medal "For Victory over Germany".
In 1921, after the war, Ivan Semenovich continued his studies at the Kharkov Art School, after which, in 1948 he entered the Kiev State Art Institute. Here he was trained in the workshop historical battle-painting professor Karp Dem'yanovich Trohimenko (1885 - 1979), a pupil of NS Samokysha. It also was made known to us already thesis, identifying areas of further work.
In the works Petrova 1950-1960s. Relating to the historic and battle genre, found expression of many famous military feats of military and political figures - Prince Vladimir, Earl Christopher Antonovich Miniha, Alexander Suvorov, Mikhail Vasilyevich Frunze. In particular, in the museums of the Crimean Peninsula are his canvas "The Taking of Bakhchisarai Count Miniha troops in 1735" (State Bakhchisarai historical-cultural reserve); diorama "Storm Perekopa in 1920, 1958 (Historical Museum Krasnoperekopsky); diorama" The Siege Korsun troops Prince Vladimir of Kiev in 988 ', 1959 (National Forest "Chersonese"); diorama "Storm Perekop shaft in 1920 (the Crimean museum); diorama" landing operation on the collection of Novorossiysk, 1969 ( Military-Historical Museum of the Black Sea Fleet Sevastopol). In 2008, the Simferopol Art Museum has an exhibition of works of Ivan S., covering just this period of the artist. On display were presented sketches and sketches to Diorama "The defeat of Wrangel under Ishunyu 1920" and "The Siege of Korsun troops Prince Vladimir of Kiev in 989.
From 1954 to 1968 Ivan S. Petrov taught painting in the Crimean Art College. NS Samokysha. In 1983 the artist was awarded the title of Honored Artist of Ukraine. In memory of the military past in 1985 he was awarded the Order of the Patriotic War II degree. Ivan S. Petrov died July 3, 1990
 You can not argue that Petrov did not react to trends and directions ¬ tion in the arts, whom he met during his travels around the country and abroad. Yet, the inner life of Ivan S. Petrov and his works have been formed under the influence of such famous historical artists as Nikolai Semenovich Samokish (1860-1944) and Jan Matejko (1838-1893), Evsei Evseyevich Moiseenko (1916-1988). Their work has always been close to him in spirit and interpretation of images.
Through his paintings and dioramas viewer can touch the events of the past, whose memory will always exist, regardless of modern attempts, this past altered. Petrov, having started his difficult and responsible work of the artist-historian, was fully aware of the impact of art on society. In the works of Ivan S. reflect the special, reverent attitude to the country's history, in which any event worthy of artistic expression, in which no place for prejudice and neglect.
