In their quests that time Nicholas Rotanov aspires to new content picturesque experience of Russian Symbolism. Artist lot of experimenting with a variety of graphic techniques, tries on a single sheet to combine and set of prints, and collage, and the play of color spots. But this creative integrity and self-sufficiency, despite a teacher Rotanova in Remote People's University of Art, inevitably led to a charge of "formalism" and closed the artist access to the official exhibition Moscow Union and the Artists Union.

But the stigma of "formalist", sullen, silent failures vystavkomov, the inability to show their work, threats and surveillance oppressed, they failed to break an artist. Rotanov always remained a romantic, inspired by the poetry of Basho, M. Tsvetaeva, M. Voloshin.

The earliest of those shown at the exhibition Rotanova dated to the late 1960's - early 1970's, when a wave of public drunkenness figurative paintings of the artist captured the fascination with ancient Russian art, paintings and at the same time the traditions of impressionism and expressionism. In most non-objective compositions, written in 1970-1980-x, Rotanov creates its own world, not mimicking the attributes of the surrounding reality, but a convincing and self-sufficient. Most important for Rotanova were impressions of the exhibitions of Russian avant-garde and American abstract art, familiarity with the works of L. Popova, O. Rozanova, A. Rodchenko, Filonov, Kazimir Malevich, Alexandra Exter, the search for "pure color", the work spots, variations in color. In his notebooks Rotanov admits: "To Kazimir Malevich am as the first teacher - I have thoroughly studied his texts. Kandinsky - this is for me fundamentals of composition.
The exhibition at the Tretyakov Gallery is presented only one side of the creative legacy - graphics, experimental paintings. Painting, as well as its theoretical literary experience while they wait for their researchers, publications. But now we can say that it will attract the attention of the thoughtful viewer.
