Despite the success of his cartoons, Daumier lived in great poverty. In the end, Camille Corot gave him a house in Valmondua, where he settled.

The first retrospective exhibition of Daumier, organized in 1878 by Durand-Ruelle, had no success.
Daumier died blind in the next year after this exhibition.
