Karl Schmidt-Rottluff (1884-1976)

Karl Schmidt was born in a suburb Schemnitz, called Rottluff. Since 1905, he added the title of the suburbs to his name.
In 1905, deciding to study architecture, he moved to Dresden and went to the Technical Academy at the department of architecture. In the same year, he and his fellow students Kirchner Hekel (with whom he had been friends ever since elementary school) and Blyayl founded the artistic group "Most" (see story on Kirchner). That he found the band's name (a quote from "Thus Spake Zarathustra, Nietzsche:" The greatness of man lies in the fact that he is a bridge, not an end ").

In 1906 he abandoned his studies to fully posvtit himself to painting. He has appeared metsen - Hamburg lawyer Gustav Shifler began to collect his schedule.

Like other members of the group, Schmidt-Rottluff was busy printing graphics, in particular, wood engraving - it is by 400 woodcuts, 121 lithographs and 96 etchings on metal, he created in the period between 1905 and 1927.

From 1905 to 1912 he published his engravings, he later began to turn to professionals who have done it for short runs of 25 or 30 zhekzemplyarov. In his printed graphics is often a religious theme - this differs from other members of the group "Most".

In 1911 he moved to Berlin and did not leave it until the end of life, except during mobilization (1915-1919) and several trips in the early 1930's.
In 1912, in Hamburg, he had his first solo exhibition.
