This is Garik Assa ... veteran

Added after 3 minutes 34 minutes
Art group "New Artists' Gallery Inutero

In "Panopticon Inutero" exhibition "New Artists" - something like an echo of Moscow last year's big retrospective at the Russian Museum. New Artists - the most important phenomenon of the St. Petersburg art 80-ies, and probably one of the most interesting phenomena of late Soviet culture. With their reputation as an interesting thing happened. Of course, they are not forgotten, but memories of them are now surprisingly weak, requires a certain constant reinforcement. Amazingly it is primarily not even because of talents to the band, but due to the fact that the "New Artists" in all contemporary Russian art most closely associated with mass culture, with the obvious Perestroika canon. They worked together and were close to all the major figures of the Leningrad rock music, founder of Timur Novikov was a regular designer shows and posters of the "Cinema", one of the most active of the "new", Sergei Bugaev starred in the cult of Solov'ev, "Asse", and other artists in varying degrees, participated in the making of the film (itself a word "ace" is borrowed from the local circles of slang), "Pop-Mechanics Sergei Kuriokhin initially existed at all as a musical extension of the group. The absence of around a "New Artists", considering all of the above, the cult of difficult to explain. Could it be that the violence of the 80's drove out of memory work of Novikov and his friends in the next decade - the creation of the New Academy of Fine Arts, ironically, the conservative movement "new and serious", flirting with the Black-Hundred aesthetics. All this, in general, was as witty and, perhaps even more subtly than that Novikov did in the 80's, but far less charming.

Exhibition in Inutero describes the five-year period just before the start klassitsistskogo turning in search of "new": 1982-1987 years. The band formed after Novikov and his friend Ivan Sotnikov quarrel with the Fellowship of experimental art. The quarrel, according to legend, originated from the fact that one of the exhibitions by young artists either found, or dig up a hole in the wall and hang her sign, says it is not just a hole, and "zero-object." Liberal, but still semi-official organization, it was not pleasant, and Novikov began to create their own, alternative. Despite the wild freedom, "New Artists" was a movement with a clear leader. On late Novikov remembered as a man of amazing organizational skills. He tried to become something of a Russian by Andy Warhol, to create not just an influential circle, but a whole new structure of art: painting, music, home theater, movies (in close connection with "new artists" started to make their "nekrorealisticheskie" movies Eugene Yufit) . In the late 80's along with Vladimir Novikov Mamysheva Monroe, in fact, invented in Russia, video art, calling it "pirate television". In contrast to the Moscow underground of the same time, "New Artists" were much more closely associated with natural informal movements - Soviet hippies and punks, and their art is very close to several aestheticized punk riot, funny shock first got the basics. Hence, also - and fundamentally new for the Soviet unofficial art image of the artist, not reclusive studio, not an intellectual leader and not gay alcoholic, and pop figures - fascinating, not only in art, and not so much ideas as paradoxical behavior, constant activity in a variety of spheres.

And here they are closest to the American "new wave" - Basquiat, Keith Herring, Robert Rauschenberg. The proximity of this not only behavioral but also in the very manner of the "new artists": mock-furious poster neoekspressionizm Oleg Kotelnikov, thoughtful and very funny primitivist fir Sotnikova, schematic aggressive monsters Victor Tsoi, distinctly reminiscent of the Herring (Choi, incidentally, very cute pictured). In total, the exhibition presents works by 20 artists, is less than in St. Petersburg. But still able to see the "New Artists" in any representative volume - to Moscow is very valuable.
