Aksenov was hospitalized in January 2008 after a stroke, which occurred when the writer was driving the car. One day after hospitalization in SRI ambulance Sklifosovsky had an operation to remove a blood clot of the carotid artery, but the writer's condition remained extremely serious. In March of that year, Aksenova for treatment was transferred to the Burdenko Neurosurgery Institute. At the end of February 2009 at the Research Institute Sklifosovsky writer had an operation due to complications in the abdominal cavity.

Aksenov was one of the most famous young Soviet writers at the turn of 1950-60-ies because of the story "Colleagues" and the novel "Star ticket. In 1970 the position of the writer in the Soviet Union has changed and it stopped printing. At this time, Aksenov wrote the famous novel "Burn" and "The Island of Crimea", not counting on their publication. In 1979, Aksenov, along with many other writers took part in the organization of the almanac Metropol, which has not passed the Soviet censorship, however, was published abroad. As a result of the scandal erupted after the publication of the Metropole Hotel in the U.S., Aksenov out of the Union of Soviet Writers.

In 1980, the writer emigrated to the United States, resulting in lost Soviet citizenship (he was returned only after 10 years). Aksenov lived in the States until 2004, teaching Russian literature at various universities. In the U.S., he wrote the trilogy "Moskovskaya saga" novel "Say Cheese" and other works.
