Conrad Ubans (Ubāns Konrads Aleksandrs), (1893 - 1981)
One of the most well-known Latvian artists. He painted landscapes in the vicinity of Riga, Pardaugava, Koknese and Perses, portraits and still lifes. The influence of modernist feel in his early works, then turned to Impressionism and Post-Impressionism. He was an outstanding expert in the field of painting technology.
He was born December 31, 1893 in Riga.
He studied at the Odessa Art School (1910), then in Riga Art School (1911-1915), continued his education at the Penza Art School (1915-1916).
He worked as a decorator of the New Riga Theatre (1913), deputy director of the National Museum of Art (1920-1925). From 1925 he worked Latvian Academy of Art and Painting - first lecturer, associate professor (since 1941), Professor (since 1944), professor of Technology (1950), Professor of Painting (1956-1981).
He participated in the Union "Sadarbs" (1924) and exhibitions of independent artists. He was an honorary member of the Artists' Union (1933). In 1940 he helped organize the Union of Artists, a member since 1944, was a member of the Union of Artists.
Participation in exhibitions - in 1911. Personal exhibitions in Riga (1920, 1923, together with L.Libertu, 1957, 1963, 1965, together with P.Upīti, 1969, 1971, 1973, 1980, 1983, 1993-1994), Cesis (1943), Rujiena (1969 ), Liepaja (1970), Koknese (1981). A memorial exhibition of Dole (1987), Madonna, Liepaja (1994), USA (1999). He has participated in numerous group exhibitions in Latvian and abroad.
Conrad Ubans awarded the Latvian SSR, honored worker of arts (1945) and Artist of the Latvian SSR (1959) titles.
He was awarded prizes Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Latvian SSR (1949, 1956, 1957, 1971, 1974 and 1978), the State premiiey Latvian SSR (1958), Order of Red Banner of Labor (1967).
Conrad Ubans died August 30, 1981 in Riga.
