По умолчанию Todd Hart: How to sell art

Many of my friends - musicians, artists and designers. Most of them earns on his case quite a bit. In this article I am going to discuss how to earn money from their own creativity, because I believe that this is real work. I am not involved in-depth research on this subject, though, perhaps in vain - I'm just here to present their point of view.

Money for the arts (in music, fashion and fine arts), you can earn primarily, if you give people something unique that they really want and could not find cheaper anywhere else. A good example - live performance. It's easy to find free music online, but get a feeling from the concert can only send them to him. Everything works just as well with a great work of art. Its creation can take as much as needed to write good music album, but the feelings it can not be stored on a disc and give it to people around for free. To feel, to get the highest experience, you should buy the product and put it in their own homes or look at it in a museum.

Everyone thought that the border disappeared with the advent of the Internet and inexpensive software equipment, will be a fantastic opportunity for the musicians, and an unlimited choice of music - just what you need all the listeners. But now, almost no one earns on the music, only a few world-renowned groups and DJs. But I still believe that easy access to the creative world - a good thing, in the end, I believe that thanks to him, the great ideas easier to be born and to continue its movement in the world.

One of the effects of this phenomenon is that the creative "giants" dominated. Once a person becomes a star, it becomes many times more successful (albeit short term) than such a celebrity in the past. How Chrystia Freeland wrote in his article in the Financial Times: «Globalization and its technology give rise to the effect of" winner-gets-all ". ( «Winner Takes It All», a song of Abba - ca. Ed.) Gap between the popular Oprah Winfrey show and the third or fourth most popular talk show in Chicago, many times more than forty years ago. " The same can be said of most of the creative industries - the difference between a truly successful and the other is enormous. So many times easier to interest a wide audience, but also many times more difficult to keep it after. Therefore, such a prevalent musical PR-agency, whereas before labels relied only on traditional media such as radio and television. To illustrate: in the past year, most money earned on the old labels, known to all musicians, such as The Beatles or Michael Jackson. Record companies can not earn so much on someone new, even if it is a great album and a brilliant actor.

All the worse is that today is really hard to find interesting new sound. The audience is increasingly divided into two types: old fans who love it when a new artist sounds like Wham or Italo disco (they reached a point in his life, when not needed a new, but still pretend to listen to new music) and young students who do not even know the old artists, so for them it is just class music. So stop musical progress, lost demanding ears.

Also there is a conflict between what make the album a new and fresh, but such that it listened to enough people. The more intense the press will be energetically promoting a new music album or direction, the sooner tusovka no longer support its author, because something brilliant to be elitist, special, and not mass. Nevertheless, it is the support of fans and music задротов need to ensure that songs are truly eternal.

Fashion as it is stuck between the world of music and painting: the majority of clothing can sell for thousands of dollars, as the picture, because people look at things as something that could become obsolete, requiring constant new clothes. Fashion should be sold to the masses just as music discs, which opens the same conflict, when new ideas do not get mass acceptance, and earn money from it becomes very difficult.

Art, on the contrary, more about ideas: to get the mass recognition of an artist needs one or two kolektsionera and good gallerist. Success can come even to those who are not so brilliant and unusual, but creating an image and concept are often much more complex and often intertwined with the staff of the artist, the creation of art objects - it does not work by itself (as a music album or a collection of clothing). In addition, the loss of collectors and their interests can lead to irretrievable fall of the artist in the abyss of poverty.

So how people can sell songs today? The success of the iTunes service is based on fear and the ease of access to music, they hope that people are so technologically stupid or lazy to not be found on the Internet mp3 free, or so conscientious that simply have to pay for music. This is combined with an easy, cheap and quick way to click-and-buy (click and buy). In fact, all of it is already clear that this whole moralschina "Thou shalt not steal" a long time is not relevant, so that the emphasis is on simplification of purchase. There is a restriction of access to free mp3 and other information in the first lines of search queries, because it's so people will buy more. That's why Rupert Murdoch and company so enthusiastically convince search engines do not provide material that people could use for free: News from large Web sites and free links to Rapidshare, Zshare and so on.

Obviously if all that I said? Perhaps most importantly, what worth to mention: Creativity should be primarily based on the idea of love and inspiration, rather than seeking to enrich themselves. That is why today, artists rely on less traditional ways of survival than before. And that's why I work in finance, and all their works leave it to the side and do it more often for free. So I get rid of stress and can enjoy their classes. Unfortunately, this situation imposes certain restrictions on what I'm doing, so I am confident that the true artists must pay what you can do and earn at the same time. So here are my solutions:

1. First, you need to do something creative and new intellectual, while leaving it to what people are willing to pay (live performance, a work of art). DJs can record remixes, which no one and to play live so it can not play any other DJ. We will not suffer, if not everyone can make their art. Everybody must survive, eat, drink, and so on, but not everyone can play live, so that everyone had to see it. Such is life.

2. Second, to fight. Fight, that is strength. Ironically, lazy - it is common for people with permanent jobs, they do not need to hurry, just do their job until they finish the working day. Performers who can not yet make a great live performance, must figure out how to skillfully sell yourself. For example, to write a good single, and distribute free to all and sundry, and, most important DJs and critics, using a simple and clever PR. Make it easy access to the mp3, and easy way to buy the track in better quality.

3. And third, check to see whether life would be nicer if you do something that is not related to traditional arts in order to earn - for example teach the class and intelligent children math. This is better than all the time trying to squeeze out half the money, spend days creating art, when that half could earn children's schooling. In the end, saying that everyone will be able to earn a music and art, is like saying that I should pay for the air.
