Of noble family, a descendant of an old family of Moldavian rulers Chegodar-Bodareskul.

He graduated from the Odessa School of Drawing. In 1869-1873 he studied at the IAH in the class of historical painting at TA Neff, P. Shamshina, VP Vereshchagin.
