Leonardo da Vinci - Mona Lisa ( La Gioconda )
1503-1505
oil on canvas 77 x 53 cm
Paris . Louvre
This is probably a portrait of the wife of a merchant Giocondo (hence the title of the painting - Mona Lisa ) , the identification shown conclusively established .
« Mona Lisa" is considered one of the best works in the genre of portraiture, influenced by the work of the High Renaissance and indirectly through them - on the subsequent development of the genre, which was a " must always return to the" Mona Lisa " as a model of the unattainable , but mandatory ».
art historians have noted that the portrait of the Mona Lisa was a crucial step in the development of Renaissance portraiture . Rothenberg writes, " although Quattrocento painters left a number of important works of this genre, yet their achievements in the portrait are, so to speak, out of proportion to advances in major scenic genres - in the compositions on religious and mythological themes . The inequities of the portrait genre affected already in the " iconic" portrait images . Actually portrait of the XV century , despite their indisputable physiognomic similarities and radiated a sense of inner strength were also distinguished by the external and internal stiffness . All the wealth of human feelings and emotions that characterizes biblical and mythological images of the painters of the XV century , is usually not the property of their portrait work . Echoes of this can be seen in the earlier portraits of Leonardo himself , he created in the early years of stay in Milan. (...) In comparison with them a portrait of the Mona Lisa is seen as the result of a giant qualitative shift . First iconic image in its importance was on a par with the most vivid images of other genres of painting ».
Lazarev , agrees :" There is hardly any other in the light of the painting , which art critics would write such nonsense abyss , as it celebrated work Leonardo's hand. (...) If Lisa di Antonio Maria Gherardini di Nolde , virtuous matron and the wife of one of the most respected Florentine citizens , everyone heard it , she would , no doubt, genuinely surprised . And even more would be surprised Leonardo set himself here is much more modest and , at the same time , a much more difficult task - to give a picture of the human person , which would finally dissolved the last vestiges of a kvattrochentistskoy statics and psychological immobility. (...) And so a thousand times right was the art critic, who pointed out the futility of transcripts that smile . Its essence lies in the fact that here is given one of the first Italian art attempts to portray the natural mental state for its own sake , as an end in itself , without any attendant religious and ethical motivations . Thus, Leonardo was able to revive his model so that, in comparison with her older portraits seem as if frozen mummies ».
