Born to a Russian diplomat Prince PI Trubetskoy and the American pianist Ada Vinams. Childhood years he lived in Italy for the parent Villa Ada di Giff near Lake Maggiore. With eight years in modeling under the guidance of artist D. Rantsoni with a passion making puppets for a home theater.

In 1884 it had moved to Milan, where he took lessons at the marble sculpture craftsmanship of Piedmont D. Barkal, and E. Badzaro and D. Grundy. In 1885 he began working in her own studio in Milan. In 1886, the first time exhibited sculpture "Horse" at the exhibition in the museum Brera. He worked as an animal painter and portraitist. Occasional painting and pastel. In 1883, first visited Russia a few months staying with relatives in Podolia. In 1897 accepted the proposal of the Director MUZhViZ Prince EI Lviv teach sculpture and moved to Russia. In 1906-1914 he lived and worked in Paris, annually visited Italy, traveled to England and Sweden. Exhibited their works in the Salon d'Automne, the exhibitions of the National Society of Fine Arts and the Society of animal artist. In 1910 he created a competition project for the monument to Alexander II of St. Petersburg and the draft gravestones Komissarzhevskaya in 1912 - a monument chairman of I-th of the State Duma SA Muromtsev in a new cemetery Donskoy Monastery in Moscow. Solo exhibitions were held in London (1931), Bergamo (1933), Cairo and Alexandria (1934), Milan and Verbania (1936). The memorial exhibition Trubetskoy were organized in Milan (1940) and Verbania (1952). Retrospective of works of masters were shown at the State Russian Museum in Leningrad (1966), Museum of landscape in Verbania (1990), the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow (1991).

Paolo Troubetzkoy - eminent sculptor last third of the XIX - first third of the twentieth century. As aptly remarked art historian Igor Grabar, he was "first brought to Russia interested in instant impressions of life, showed immediate importance and beauty of living forms." Troubetzkoy has developed his own style in sculpture, featuring expressive sculpting, sketch even completed work that relates his work with the art of the Impressionists. He worked almost entirely in plaster, often without preparatory drawings directly from nature. Bronze castings are usually produced by specially invited artists bronze case. Many of the cast from plaster molds Trubetskoy were performed after his death, in the middle of the twentieth century.
