Accused of forging and selling paintings for $ 16 million convicted in Germany
accused of forging and selling paintings for $ 16 million convicted in Germany
MOSCOW, October 27 - RIA Novosti. The Regional Court of Cologne on Thursday sentenced the four defendants in the case of the sale of fake paintings by 16 million euros to the terms of the year and nine months probation to six years of real prison, reports the magazine Spiegel. It clarifies the issue, so lenient sentence was made possible thanks to the fact that the accused gave a confession. Organizer of Wolfgang Beltrakki, his friend Otto Schulte and his wife Helena Kellinghaus sentenced to six, five and four years' imprisonment respectively. Sister Helen, Jeanette, has received one year and nine months probation. According to prosecutors, in just the last 15 years, figures of the business put up for sale 47 written Beltrakki pictures, posing for a fake works by famous modern artists. The defendants argued that the paintings have got them in the inheritance of family members. At the same time in fact both the deceased relative - Werner and Johan Jeghers Knops, allegedly collected at the beginning of the 20th century, a vast collection of paintings and put it in the Second World War - not only did not purchase works of art, but were not familiar with each other. State prosecution believes that defendant failed to sell at least 14 paintings. In particular, the painting "Landscape with horses," supposedly written by the German expressionist Heinrich Campendonk for 850 000 euro bought U.S. actor Steve Martin. The greatest damage to persons involved in the case struck collector and publisher Daniel Filipakki who paid about 5.5 million euros for the painting "The Forest (2)" Max Ernst's alleged brush. Just a few imitations of the Ernst and Campendonk were purchased by museums and collectors for amounts ranging from 500 thousand to 2.9 million euros. Among the other artists whose pictures fake accused were Frenchmen Fernand Leger and Andre Derain. In this case the accused could mislead many respected experts, including Werner Spies, who was personally acquainted with Ernst. According to prosecutors, only forged paintings that are officially considered lost and reproductions are available. Beltrakki carefully copied all the features are artists, and wrote on the canvas of the century, while the design patterns used old figures of the case frame and rusty nails. In this case the defendants still made some bad mistakes, yet escapes the eyes of experts. In particular, the frame of the majority of pictures were made from the same tree, and when they are writing the use of titanium oxide that did not exist in the estimated time of creation of paintings. In addition, in the title picture Leger "Still Life", the word "nature" was not written in French (nature), and in German (Natur). http://www.ria.ru/culture/20111027/472656167.html |
