In the Odessa region ends archaeological season in 2010. After working for three summer months with a shovel and a brush, the scientists returned to the cozy rooms, to systematize the field documents, photo archives, drawings, and, in fact, finds. "Today" talking to our Schliemann and Evans to find out what new discoveries they can to please a respectable audience.

«BLACK Archaeology - WORSE SARMAT». Unfortunately, the surveys that were conducted this year, the scale can not be called. Archaeologists turn prevented the traditional problems: inadequate funding, which has become even more scarce with the onset of the crisis and competition from the "black" counterparts of illegal hunters. Last, the scientists said, in recent years so insolent that often rob the monuments in front of the expeditions. "We went for lunch, and during that time the robbers in search of valuables dismantled stonework on the dig, - says Natalya Sekerskaya, expedition leader Odessa Archaeological Museum in the ancient city Niconium (s Roksolana Ovidiopol district)."

Nikonov - archaeological monument of national significance, the unique ancient Greek city-state founded in the VI century BC by colonists either from Istria (a city in present-day Romania), whether because of banded Miletus. In III-II cent. BC Niconium destroyed associate of Alexander of Macedon Zopirion. At the beginning of our era, the city rebuilt as a reference point on the border of the Great Steppe, but two centuries later under the blows he is ready to cease to exist altogether.

Located on the slope of the Dniester estuary Niconium sometimes called "Odessa Atlantis" - the beginning of last century, the lower terrace of the city, its richest areas, collapsed in the estuary. The ancient harbor is located on the bottom at 100 meters from the modern beach!

Today is a dead policy again threatening barbarians. However, instead of Scythian bows and swords-akinak they were armed with metal detectors and geoskanerami for finding coins, weapons, jewelry and valuable ceramics to a depth of 10 meters. After the attacks of "black" workers of the Odessa museum can only pick up what disdained by criminals. In search of treasure hunters destroy property foundations of ancient buildings, mixed layers belonging to different eras, and artifacts dig themselves out of historical context, "killing" 90%of their value as a historical source. "The same coin archaeologist interested only in the case, if you know the place and the layer in which she was found. Without this anchor, it will not say anything ", - said Sekerskaya.

In the looting of priceless monument to participate as citizens Roxolan, which is almost the only income, and visiting hunters. In this case, black archeologists have believed Niconium their property and even ... attack university staff and guests from Poland (together with Odessites excavation involved students and teachers of Torun University Copernicus). "At the Poles once incited the dogs" - to share with us one of the participants. According Sekerskaya, damage Nikonia just this summer, more than the most rough estimates, one million hryvnia. A couple of years and the policy would be nothing left.

Numerous statements to the police are inconclusive: police managers have simply put them under the carpet or entrust to understand the district, which has neither the desire nor the ability to fully protect the cultural heritage. "At one time, helping regional administrations, paid guard, but now this is not", - complains leader of the expedition.

Meanwhile, in oblUVD claim that they know nothing about the looting of the monument. "And anyway, we dig do not do" - said the head of our DSP control Viktor Miroshnichenko.

Archaeologists believe the deal with the robbers is impossible without changes in legislation. Needs to tighten sanctions against vandals and create in the internal affairs special forces to protect cultural heritage monuments, as did the Greeks, Italians and Romanians. But most importantly - we need political will, now is not observed. "Moreover, the first face of the country de facto encourage black archeology, gathering a collection of artifacts illegally harvested," - said the director of the Odessa branch of the Institute of Archaeology NAS Tatiana Samoilova.

According to her, from the activities of "black" suffers all the archaeological sites of the area. "I do not think that we have stayed at least one nerazgrablenny mound" - she says.

ANTIQUITY RETAIL AND WHOLESALE. According to experts, in recent years, prices for antiques in Ukraine and abroad have risen by about half. If previously found in good condition, bronze arrowhead early Scythian epoch was worth on the black market 30-40 hryvnia, then now is cheaper than 70 USD you do not buy this item. But the tips - it is abundant material, and therefore, like small coin (such as olviyskie dolphins) are at bargain prices. Other artifacts are much more expensive. Thus, it is a whole (as they say, archaeologists discovered in situ) antique amphora pull to 3-5 thousand hryvnia. A small black-lacquer vessel with a list - 5-6 thousand. A little gold fibula (clasp for the cloak) Hun era sold at a local Internet auctions with a starting price of 12 thousand hryvnia!

HEART Tyra and crossings for Darius. Because of the professional treasure hunters, archaeologists do not like to talk about their discoveries. Fear that the criminals read the newspapers about the exciting discoveries, attacked with triple forces of the already spotted with predatory pits and trenches built. In addition, researchers are afraid of competition from the academic world who are dreaming, as if to steal their achievements. In general, the pull nuggets of information from the gray-haired servants of Clio is very difficult. But something that we have. So, Tatiana Samoilova, who runs an expedition in the ancient Tyre (Belgorod-Dniester), said that this summer its wards for the first time defeated a large excavation inside the Akkerman Fortress (previously there were just doing small reconnaissance pits, basically the same work was carried out for the walls). And immediately came upon the remains of some buildings, according to the architecture, the public. "The biggest mystery Tyra - that's what decades of research, we found only residential buildings. No church, no civilian buildings, except the Roman veksillyatsii (barracks, which housed the garrison - Auth.) - He says. - Archaeologist Ernst Stern believed that the central part of town was what is now the garrison courtyard of the fortress. That's where we found the mentioned structure. " Archaeologist does not exclude that the expedition has opened Tyrian agora (market square in the ancient Greek polis, a place of Common assembly. Usually was surrounded by commercial and public buildings).

In addition, scientists discovered that the Dniester estuary remains of an ancient quarry with stone slabs, proving that Tyre was made of local rather than imported materials.

No less promising excavation, which for years has sat at the Danube Orlovka Reni district director of the Archaeological Museum Igor Bruyako. Orlovka (formerly known as Kartal) - unique in every sense of the monument. Firstly, it is almost the only place in Ukraine, where people have lived continuously with mednokamennogo Age (Chalcolithic) until the late Middle Ages, that is five thousand years! Secondly, in Orlovka area located conveniently ferry, which had been used at different times of the Persian king Darius I - when I went to the march of the Scythians, the Roman emperor Valens II during the war with the Goths, the Turkish sultan Bayezid II, the Ottoman Empire, Moldavia, Bessarabia and Crimea, and finally the Russian Tsar Nicholas I, who started with Orlovka campaign against the Turks occupied the Balkans.

Recent years, archaeologists have examined under Kartaly burial VIII century BC, left, is likely to Illyrians - Indo-European population of the northern part of the Balkan Peninsula. The cemetery, says Professor Bruyako quite large - 250 burials. Excavating them, scientists have found a lot of things. "From the latest discoveries - interesting adobe altar with borders. A couple of years ago unearthed the burial of the child. On his hands were bronze bracelets, and clothing decorated with 4,000 shells "- the director of the museum.

GRAVE Radetsky. But the most serious discovery was made this summer in Odessa. Group of volunteers and archaeologists found in the park Illich (out on the site destroyed by Stalin, 1 Christian cemetery), the tomb of the hero of the Russian-Turkish war of 1877-1879, the Fyodor Radetsky. Crypt of the general, who were identified by a granite monument fragments, found 10 meters from the exploded Bolsheviks All Saints Church.

The monument, depicted in pre-revolutionary postcards, which are 5-meter cliff of red granite, symbolizing the mountain of St. Nicholas on Shipka (defense Shipka Pass glorified Radetsky). On the cliff, leaning on the Orthodox cross, stood a bronze Radetsky in ancient garb of a warrior with a drawn sword in his hand. The monument was surrounded by 12 granite pedestals with imperial eagles, which violated the captured Turkish cannons. As a church, a monument Radetzky be restored.

As a church, a monument Radetzky be restored. However, when and at whose expense, as yet unknown. City Council deputy Valentin Dubovenko, on whose initiative were conducted excavations, told the "Today" that he intends to create a fund that will collect funds. "Generally, we are coordinating our actions with the churchmen. They gather in the coming months to put near the former church wooden chapel. During the construction we zakonserviruem grave. Then, when the chapel appears, set the memorial stone of the crypt and start looking for money. Perhaps, we turn to the Russians and the Bulgarians - Radetzky because he fought for the independence of Bulgaria ", - said Dubovenko.

In the UK, found a unique Roman helmet

Found by an amateur archaeologist Roman helmet was sold for 3.6 million dollars

Roman helmet found by a British amateur archaeologist, was sold at Christie's auction on Oct. 7 for the 3,6 million dollars (2,3 million pounds), according to Agence France-Presse. The final price was eight times the amount at which the helmet evaluated before trading.
Well-preserved bronze helmet from the late I - beginning of II century AD. He was found in May 2010: he was found with a metal detector amateur archaeologist from Cumbria, who requested anonymity. Specialists suggest that a helmet with a mask in the Greek style, covering the entire face, has not been used in combat, but rather a ceremonial purposes and for competitions.

At the time of discovery helmet consisted of 67 pieces - 33 major and 34 minor. His auctioned only after restoration. The museum, located in the city of Carlisle near the place of occurrence, raising funds for the purchase of a helmet to prevent its sale abroad, but failed to get sufficient amounts, in spite of government funding in the amount of one million pounds.

Buyer's name not reported, we only know that he was not present at the auction in person, but participated in them over the phone. All in all trades involved six potential buyers: two person, three of them on the phone and one via the Internet.

Previously in the UK found only two equally well-preserved Roman helmet. One, discovered in 1796, in the British Museum in London, and the second found in the early XX century, can be seen in the Edinburgh Museum.

Tomb of China's first Emperor picked up the Greek sample

Chinese archaeologist Duan Tsinbo, head of the excavation Terracotta Army, delivered a lecture at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, Canada, said that the tomb of China's first emperor Qin Shi Huang, the "protected" terracotta warriors, was modeled on the ancient Greek Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, one of the ancient "seven Wonders of the World. " About this newspaper The Independent.
This theory is contrary to traditional notions of cultural relations between the West and China, referring to the birth to a much earlier period. It is considered that cultural influences are spread with trade along the Silk Road, which began operations in the II century BC, after about a century after the construction of the tomb of Qin Shi Huang.

However, Duan Tsinbo drew attention to the fact that the architecture of the tomb of China's first emperor repeated the Greek samples: it had a stepped form and was crowned with a sculpture of a chariot drawn by four horses. The most famous example of this architecture - the tomb of Mausolus king of Halicarnassus (present Bodrum on the Aegean coast of Turkey), built in the IV century BC. It was assumed that the soul of the deceased stepped roof rises toward the sky.

Halicarnassus Mausoleum (the word is just on behalf of Mausolus) was destroyed by an earthquake in the XIII century, and in the XVI century ruins of dismantled the Knights Hospitaller Order of Jerusalem (later known as the Order of Malta) for the construction of hitherto preserved castle of St. Peter. The first excavation and reconstruction of the Mausoleum had a look of British archaeologists in the middle of the XIX century.

Much of the tomb of Qin Shi Huang, near Xi'an (the ancient Chang'an, capital of China and the eastern terminal point of the Silk Road), has not yet been excavated. However, this burial is one of the main attractions of China, because it found thousands of famous terracotta statues in full size.

According to Duan Tsinbo, the capital of the Qin Shi Huang was a cosmopolitan city, which is also reflected in his tomb. So, in a mass grave tomb builders found remains of people who probably do not belong to the Mongoloid race, and there were, presumably, from the western part of Eurasia. In addition, analyzing the terracotta statues of wrestlers and acrobats, were found in the tomb, Duan Tsinbo came to the conclusion that the people they represent (all the statues have pronounced the portrait features, that is likely to have specific models) were not born China. Archaeologists believe that they came from Burma.

The walls of the houses were decorated with frescoes, and now on, nothing was left. According to preliminary data, the cause of the collapse of steel, heavy rains, which are undermining the building. Experts also claim that the water here is not to blame - all a matter of insufficient care for the archaeological sites. House gladiators located in the area of Pompeii, where there is still work to archaeologists, and tourists were not allowed into it. in Pompeii collapsed "house Gladiators"

On the territory of the ancient Roman city of Pompeii has fallen building, whose age is estimated at two thousand years. As reported by Associated Press, we are talking about a house that is practiced in the ancient gladiators. It was located on the main street of the city, near the amphitheater.
As a result of the collapse were no injuries. It is noted that the part of Pompey, in which there was a "house of gladiators," closed to tourists, and there are only archaeologists.

The walls were decorated with frescos, most of whom are now dead. Minister of Culture of Italy said that it might have survived some of the images located in the lower parts of walls.

According to scientists, "House of the gladiators was built shortly before the death of Pompey, which was buried under lava and ash in the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD.

On the possible causes of the collapse of the building, partially destroyed even during World War II, officially not announced. Italian media, which referenced AP, suggest that the incident could trigger heavy rains.

Kiev

archeological finds of the capital: The magical amulets and chess clay

Experts told Komsomolskaya Pravda about artifacts found in the city over the last decade.

Alexander BOCHKAREV - 25.11.2010

Hard to believe that a modern office and apartment buildings is another Kiev. But the antiquity hunters say the same Podol where no stacks, come across a wonderful thing. Multimeter layer of earth conceals an entire residential neighborhoods, churches, shops and the strengthening of the ancient city. Once in the center begins any construction on the place, archaeologists and go inch by inch thoroughly investigated territory.

Checkers of ivory

In 2007-2008, during archaeological excavations in the street Spassky, 35 researchers have found ... a workshop production pieces! In a small area, which once served as a workshop, were found bones and chips for a game called "Tavlya. Unfortunately, as we played it, still have not figured out, but historians agree that Tavlya - mother of checkers.

- Materials for chips served as ivory, which were delivered to Kyiv merchants from Northern Europe - said the director of the Kiev Center for Archaeology Michael Sagaydak. - During excavations in the street Saviour we have found many of these figures. Unfortunately, many of them damaged by fire. Probably the reason for this fire, which gave Prince Andrew Bogolyubskii, together with Polovtsy seized and plundered Kiev in 1167.

No less interesting archaeological finds discovered in 2004 during excavations in the streets Mezhigorskaya, 3 /7. During stripping the walls of the construction pit at a depth of two meters from the wall, broke a fragment of rock. With its detailed consideration of the archaeologists concluded that this chess piece - the first found on the territory of Ukraine. It's made of clay and resembles a man of Asian appearance.

Mysterious Charm

Three years ago an archeological expedition carried out excavations on the territory of Yaroslavl lane, 7 /9. Among other artifacts - ceramics and household items - Archaeologists have discovered an amazing object trapezoidal shape. Value of little more than a matchbox, he is made of black steatite - a rare mineral, which can be found only in the Nordic island of Gotland. The find turned out to be nothing more than a "hammer Thor" - charmed amulet worn around the neck Scandinavian warriors of a thousand years ago. According to legend, before the Varangian boy becomes a warrior, priests were hanged about his neck amulet amulet. He was "charged" their spells and is intended to protect people, who bore him. The Scandinavians believed that these boys protects himself god Thor - the mighty giant and master of storms.

Most likely, found the amulet belonged Varangian warrior, who with his tribe was in the squad Prince of Kiev. Archaeologists believe that the "hammer Thor" found himself on an archaeological site by accident.

- At Mount Schekavitsa, according to legend, buried prophetic Oleg. There, according to our assumptions, there is an ancient burial Varangian warriors - says junior research fellow of the capital of the Centre of Archaeology Sergey Taranenko, who led the excavations. - Most likely, the water has eroded the ancient burial ground on Schekavitse and amulet slipped to the foot of the mountain.

 Printing Izyaslav

Many interesting discoveries were made during the reconstruction of Independence Square in 2001. So, a few dozen meters from the gate Lyadsky archaeologists found fragments of an ancient building. Most likely, it belonged to the clerk, who lived in the XII century. At this point, and was found print Izyaslav, the eldest son of Yaroslav the Wise, who ruled the city since 1054 to 1078. Material - lead alloy with a small silver impregnation. On one side is engraved print outlet (ornament. - Auth.) On the back - the face of St. Demetrius. Such a coinage Russian princes adopted from Byzantium. Found seal was attached to the official orders Izyaslav Yaroslavovich. By the way, Kievites Izyaslav disliked because he was a man of erratic and violent.

 Sword of the encrypted message

Archaeologists during excavations often come across old Russian buildings that were destroyed by fire. And the reason is not only the attacks of enemies. Until the XVI century in Upper and Lower town dominated by wooden houses, and fires were quite frequent. In one of those burned-out homesteads on the present street Saviour, 35, an archaeologist Natalia Hamayko and colleagues found an old Russian sword. During the fire due to high temperature it is strongly bent. But the discovery is unique. These swords in Kiev has not yet been found. Do weapons extraordinarily beautiful handle with a large "apple" at the end, and the blade is made very skilful. On the blade, archaeologists discovered an inscription in Latin. Unfortunately, to decipher it so far failed, the font is illegible. By forging techniques, archaeologists found that the blade came to Kiev from West Germany, which means that the inscription left Rhine blacksmith who may have engraved on the blade its own motto.

In the ancient pit will baptize children

Well the first time of Kievan Rus in the capital recently discovered on the street Pochayninskaya, 27/44. Archaeologists have found that wood well before placed under a small foundry XII century. This is indicated by a large number of molds found nearby. Were also found fragments of pottery and animal bones.

The most amazing thing - Archaeologists have discovered that, after nine centuries of the well is still functional, at the bottom it hit the springs!

 - This area is located Vvedensky temple and church officials decided to keep well, - said Sergey Taranenko. - Now there will be baptized believers.

in Pompeii collapsed house moralist

In Pompeii collapsed wall, fencing garden at the House of moralist - one of the most famous buildings of the ancient city. It is reported by Italian news agency ANSA. Specialists determine the extent of the damage. According to the preliminary version, the cause of the collapse were heavy rains.
This is the second such incident in Pompeii in the last month. Nov. 6 hit (presumably also because of rain) House of the gladiators on the main street of the city. After that, the Italian parliament held a special hearing with the Minister of Culture Sandro Bondi (Sandro Bondi). The opposition accused the officer that he was not doing enough to protect a unique archaeological monument, but Bondi has refused to resign.

House moralist gets its name because of the many ancient inscriptions on the walls containing the maxims such as "respect women", "no profanity", "not deris" and "Keep your feet clean." Also in the House of moralist preserved 2,000-year-old frescoes.

Pompeii was buried under lava and ash in the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. Since the destruction of the city was very fast, and the ashes will be a good preservative, the city is largely preserved its ancient appearance and allowed scientists to draw up a detailed picture of daily life of the Romans in the I century AD.

With respect to the detainee criminal case, said the "E-Crimea", citing the press service of the Main Directorate of the Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) in the Crimea.
According to an investigation initiated by the suspect product is packed a great cultural and historical value in a sports bag and carefully put away in the luggage compartment of a train going to Russia. However, counter-intelligence still found the old dressing.
Art critics and historians say that found massive gold bracelet about 2,6 thousand years. He is in excellent condition, and the preservation of decoration than all known in Ukraine such instances relating to the period of Greek colonization and the Bosporus. Similar decorations have become the best exhibit of St. Petersburg's Hermitage, where they are represented as a collection of Scythian gold. "

Naturally, the exportation of such property from the territory of Ukraine is strictly prohibited and punishable criminally responsible.
For archaeologists detection of gold jewelry is very rare. They are usually found only in the mounds, beneath which the Scythian nomads buried their kings and other noble persons.

Gold uplylo "overseas

Around the "Scythian Gold" does not subside and political passions. Thus, the deputy head of Presidential Administration of Ukraine, Anna Herman demanded immediate return home the gold collection, carried away by the former President Viktor Yushchenko in the U.S..

"We need to put the question very sharply - Scythian gold should go back to Ukraine", - said Herman.

In this case we are talking about gold from the collection of a private museum "PlaTar", which is part of the exhibits presented to Ukraine and is a national treasure. In the name of the museum is encrypted names of its founders: businessmen Sergey Platonov (after his death in 2005, co-owner of the collection was the son of Nicholas) and Sergei Taruta.

Anna Herman said that the collection, located in the New World with the fall of 2009, was supposed to return to Ukraine yet December 19, 2010. However, the collectors themselves say that it is not.

"It looks like Anna Nikolaevna misinformed. Under a contract with the U.S. to the collection should be in the U.S. before February 2012", - said Nikolai Platonov.

According to him, the exhibition takes place in agreement with the U.S. government. It consists of two parts: an exhibition of Ukrainian icons from gosmuzeya "Kiev-Pechersk Lavra and display of antiquities from the collection" PlaTar "from Tripoli to antiquity. The plans of the organizers - exhibit a collection of seven museums in the state.

Meanwhile, the collection "PlaTar" has repeatedly been at the center of scandals, the newspaper "Today". Among archaeologists (both Ukrainian and foreign) is widely believed that its exhibits are of dubious scientific value. "Half bought a black archeologists, and some - a fake" - said an employee of the Scythian-Sarmatian Archaeology Institute of Archaeology, Sergei Pauline.

Two years ago, a collection of "PlaTar" was exhibited in Poland, Gazeta Wyborcza wrote then damning stuff: that improper exhibit on display values obtained illegally.

Sergei Pauline also suggested that a collection of moving it abroad for sale to local collectors.

But the owners 'PlaTara' claim that they are engaged in illegal trafficking in antiquities. "All of our exhibits are bought legally on the market", - said Nikolai Platonov.
