June 18 on the island of Lanzarote died Portuguese writer and Nobel Prize for Literature in 1998, Jose Saramago, reports Diario Digital. He was 87 years. Saramago was born into a peasant family, but in the age of three his family moved to Lisbon, which was linked almost all the life of the writer. His first book was published in 1947, but then nothing Saramago published until 1966, critics noted that literary talent had come to him late. Saramago worked as a journalist, wrote about politics, but to live solely by literary work began in 1976, at 54 years of age.

The first success came a loud prose writer in 1980 with "Rising from the ground, admittedly - his first great novel. Two years later consolidated the success of "Memoirs of a convent.
