Today, January 6 marks the 20th anniversary of Nagorno-Karabakh.

I visited there in late October - early November 1990, at the height of the Azerbaijani-Armenian war. We went there with a colleague on Mossoviet Sasha Polyakov. I did a series of reports for "Radio Liberty" and the magazine "Capital". Then these stories grateful Armenians pamphlet published in the journal until he reached them, but people were recorded from the air, then unscrambled, reprinted, and semi-artisan printing on newsprint it came out. Very dear to me this brochure. I've had two. Second, I gave in Geneva, Charles Aznavour.

Then caught my eye, that the Armenians of Karabakh, in contrast to the "continental", spoke in Russian, almost without an accent. In all houses, even in villages, I have seen cases with Russian books. Even during the war he worked in Stepanakert University, and the children went to school. These were people much dignity and some internal culture. Never and nowhere have I seen people in such a mass meeting and a willingness to sacrifice. All the polls - from preschool to deep snotty old man - were determined with arms to defend their land. They did not arrange for a second Sumgait, but many were killed in the fighting. Died and those with whom I met. Since then, there was born and grew up a whole new generation that will never go away from their land.

I do not know whether I heard, but I want to convey to the courageous people of Karabakh greetings and congratulations on the anniversary of an event that dalos so easy.
