Wanderings of an artist and his path to international stardom began just with this order. Autumn of 1917, Yakovlev first came to the Far East, which went to collect visual material just in connection with the upcoming painting of the Kazan railway station. In 1918 the artist traveled to China, Mongolia and Japan, and Russia are no longer returned. An exhibition in Shanghai, Yakovlev fall of 1919 he moved to Paris next spring and has already submitted his travel sketches and paintings in the famous gallery Barbazanges. Unusual brilliance and exoticism of these studies determined the great success of the exhibition. Almost all the exhibits were sold out, and in 1922 the Parisian publisher Lucien Vozhel released album edition of 150 copies with color reproductions of works Yakovlevskij "Drawings and Paintings of the Far East" (the book was framed by Vasily Shuhaevym - a longtime friend and schoolmate of Yakovlev's Imperial Academy of Arts). At the same time they released another album with illustrations Yakovlev - on the theme of the Chinese Theater, accompanied by the text of the Chinese author Zhu Kim-Kim - an unprecedentedly successful start to the artist-a foreigner in Paris.

In 1924-1925 Yakovlev was back in the journey: passed the famous "Black cruise" firm "Sitroen" - not just an advertising campaign of similar cars, but also ethnographic and zoological expeditions to little-known regions of Africa (Sahara, Sudan, Niger, Chad, the Belgian Congo , Mozambique and Madagascar). From this journey, filled with exotic landscapes and the power of human types, bright clothing and ornaments of indigenous Africans, the artist has brought nearly 300 sketches and paintings. 228 of them were shown at the personal exhibition in the Charpentier Gallery in May 1926 and then were almost completely sold out. This brought Yakovlev, not only financial independence, but also the recognition, and even the Legion of Honor. Especially thrilled by all contemporary large group portrait in the growth of all members of the expedition (4.5 x 3 m), remarkably illusion smallest detail - this, in particular, wrote in letters and diaries of eyewitnesses that memorable exhibition - Anna Ostroumov, Konstantin Lebedev and Somov. A year in the publishing house Vozhel "which constantly worked Yakovlev, published an illustrated book about the expedition. Then for Yakovlev finally acquired a reputation for unsurpassed master of exotic themes and ethnic types. Then followed the expedition on safari in Ethiopia in 1928 (with Henry Rothschild), and a new transcontinental trip with "Sitroen" - "Yellow Cruise" in Syria, Iran, Afghanistan, Mongolia, China and Vietnam in 1931-1932, respectively. The result was a new noisy exhibition in the gallery Charpentier in 1933, where Yakovlev presented for about 500 (!) Works, many of which have been sold, and 50 - reproduced in color in a unique book publishing house Vozhel "edition of just 500 copies.
