Provenance: Through Marianne von Werefkin; Private collection, Saratoga, California. One of several representational portraits and studies that Jawlensky executed c.1900-1910. His early portraits were much more representational than his later portraiture. Our example is stylistically similar to "Young Woman with Bunch of Lilac" (c1902) (sold at Sotheby's London 10/18/2000 at £ 180,000 [$ 263,272]), "Girl with a White Apron" (c1906) (sold at Sotheby's London 10/9/2002 at £ 220,000 [$ 344,520]), and "Breton - Monsieur Castell" (1905) (sold at Arnold, Frankfurt, 9/13/1997 at DM130, 000 [$ 73.398]).
