Claude Monet spent his youth in Le Havre. A Etretat is located near Le Havre. The town nestles in a hollow between the hills on the coast of Normandy, at the English Channel.
Great chalk cliffs at Etretat on the alabaster coast (Côte d'Albatre) - the most famous section of the French coastline. On this point, the writer of XIX century. Alphonse Karr wrote: "If I had to show a friend the sea, who never saw him, I would have brought him to Etretat." The name "Etretat" has Scandinavian roots and translated means "village of the setting sun." Alabaster coast stretches for hundreds of miles from Dieppe to Etretat and beyond. Its beauty is extraordinary and has long attracted the attention of writers and poets, painters and musicians. It is here that they got their inspiration that gave birth to many masterpieces. Landscapes Etretat are a particularly magnificent sight - huge rocks penetrated vast arches, and not far from the shore a lone rock, like an obelisk, towering at 70 meters above the water. At any time, the enormity of the local rocks and crashing surf on the pebbly beach, leave an unforgettable impression. The main attraction of Etretat created by nature itself: "Triple Arch" and "Needle" - natural sculpture carved into the cliffs by the sea waves. The most beautiful view of the rocky gate, formed by wind and waves, opens with a paved trails high above the coast customs. The sight of these cliffs beckoning people to Etretat for centuries. The Romans had a way here from Lillibon. For Marie Antoinette here at the site of the seabed, was established in 1777 a special "nursery" where grown oysters. It is visible from above. And in the XIX century. a humble fishing port into a fashionable resort, attracting wealthy Parisians for its theaters, a casino and swimming pool. Castle des Egyu on the outskirts of the city considered among the European aristocracy, the most sophisticated venue for "seasons" in Etretat. However, to truly glorify its artists Delacroix, Corot, Courbet, Boudin, Manet and Monet. Composer Jacques Offenbach Orpheus built the villa, writers, Dumas, Hugo, Maupassant and Carr lived here a long time. Guy de Maupassant described the town in one of his stories: "... Ahead of an unusual kind of rock rising - round and through hole. It reminded him a huge figure of an elephant's trunk plunging into the waves." At Etretat in the Middle Ages, was born the tradition of blessing the sea. It is believed that the fisherman who caught a sea storm, saved only if at least one monk will pray for him on land. Therefore, in Etretat during mass all pray for the fishermen. According to legend, in 1792 during a terrible storm that lasted days at a rock was thrown Swedish ship. Salvation for the seamen were not, they all died except one unnamed sailor, clinging on the ledge in the cave. When he was picked up after the storm and suffered to accession to the dead, he woke up. The sailor said that all the time praying for salvation and was thrown out on a rock. Cave so called "sanctuary man" - Trou à l'Homme (trou, generally speaking, the "hole, a hole," but a "refuge"). To get to the beach of Etretat possible only through the cave in the passage between the rock arches Falaise d'Aval and Manneporte during low tide. A traveler, not knowing the schedule of the tides, risks to a certain number of hours on a deserted pebble beach or can not get down. Последний раз редактировалось tchaika; 20.10.2010 в 13:08. |
