In the early 1920's Riga photographer Robert Iohanson (1877-1959) created an extensive gallery of portraits by Russian artists and art workers. Among them are such key figures of the national artistic process, as the VM Vasnetsov, VN Domogatskii, KA Korovin, NP Krymov, MV Nesterov, KF Huon, and others. Although Iohansonom compiled an impressive volume (400 pages) an album of portraits (still, unfortunately, not published) is located in Riga, but dozens of negatives are kept in the Tretyakov Gallery.
Enthusiasm and commitment of Robert Iohansona on the album - a visible testament to his sincere respect and admiration of Russian art. Working in Moscow from 1916 to 1924, and passed even earlier in school, AL Stieglitz in St. Petersburg, he continued tirelessly to perceive Russian culture, despite the fact that at that time was already the seriousness of this artist, winner of awards at the prestigious Latvian and Russian photographic reviews. Indeed, the photographs of local painters, graphic artists, sculptors from different generations belonged mainly to the "Union of Russian Artists" and "Makovec, were in the works Iohansona indisputable example of his talent as a portrait photographer.

In his portraits, Robert Iohanson far from being an extremely precise, strict protocol and perception of reality, which is consistent with the aesthetics of verismo and outlines fotoidealy XIX century. Unlike them, he stands before us as an outstanding master of successfully developing in the first decades of the XX century art or pictorial photography, built in his work on the skillful alternation, and often documented the synthesis of realistic and emotionally impressionistic aesthetics.
Portraits Iohansona amazing variety of bold imagery. Despite the consistently inspired attitude to its models, the artist is far from a certain schematic "icon" type and portrait stamps. On the contrary, each of them, he chases an individual approach, just guessing required proportion invested in the work of copyright temperament correlated with emotional response portrayed.
In addition, a variety of ways Iohanson achieves enrichment of his creative method. First of all, he works closely with the negatives using a retouch. Then, in every way beats the possibility of the lens, changing camera angles and zoom. Finally, it acts as a skilled composer and director of lighting, climate, surroundings and the story line of the portrait. Models Iohansona then concentrated passionate process of creation (Andreev, A. Kravchenko), a free and easy copresence or communicate with the public at the time of the lyrical impulse, or involuntary trustee attitude of the soul (N. Krymov Zhukovskaya, M. Matorin, L. Pasternak, C. R.), the pensive and aloof stay in front of the photographer, allowing the viewer slowly comprehend their subtle psychological characteristics (M. Dobrov, Meshkov, I. Using various types of portrait (front full-length polufigurny chamber, situational plot or given to conventionally abstract background) Iohanson clearly tends toward poetic and romantic and subjectively experienced interpretation of the image, rather than to his journalistic and objective reportage photo documentation. And often, these portraits are interfaced not only with the world of a particular person, but unconsciously relate to more general themes and meditations on the problems of age, generational change, about loneliness and understanding of the talent and his destiny, about the daily hustle and the sublime inspiration of tradition and modernity about the life and work.
Such visual "picture thinking" Iohansona successfully complemented by remarks on the art portrayed themselves, they left behind in the form of entries on the sheets of the album. Among the most substantial and intensive examples include the words S. Zhukovsky: "The artist - the creator only as long as the lost ability to love." Clearly and concisely articulates his thoughts Gerasimov: "High Art - objectively." Courageous and selfless creative position sounds in the words of S. Romanovich: "And in a small shop, you can write beautiful things."
As a result, images of Russian artists, performed by Latvian photographer Robert Iohansonom, became not only a unique collection of excellent quality photographs and negatives, but have found full-scale value of the monumental portrait of Russian art, is not seen through the prism of its component pieces, and the concept through the thoughtful "fotopriobschenie" to the complex spiritual world of its creators.

Robert Iohanson was born December 2, 1877 into a peasant family on the farm "Tomin"
in Ayzkraulkskoy parish.
In 1896 he entered as an apprentice to a photographer Riga A. Bilinskiy.
In 1899, he received a certificate of a professional photographer and went to St. Petersburg in order to increase their knowledge of retouching and graphic skills in the school of technical drawing, AL Stieglitz.
In 1908 his family returned to Riga, opened his own photo-studio.
In 1914, at the beginning of World War I was evacuated to Moscow
worked in the studio "court" the photographer Trunov, conducted training courses on practical photography in a partnership of Russian artists.
In 1916 he opened his photo-studio in Moscow, "Venus."
From 1920 to 1923 working on an album of portraits by Russian artists and cultural figures.
In early 1924 he returned to Riga, gave an overview exhibition of his work for 25 years.
From 1924 he worked in Riga, a photographer, took an active part in the activities of Latvian photographic society: he participated in exhibitions, conducted training courses on photography.
After World War II he worked in the Rigas image ", an organization which has actively participated.
Died April 3, 1959, in 82nd year of life.

In 1980, the Tretyakov Gallery was invited relatives Riga photographer Robert Iohansona see preserved in the family of the negatives. First acquaintance with the materials determined their fate - the negatives were purchased for the museum's photographic archive.
All 47 full of negatives on glass plates measuring 13x18 (cm). On many plates are copyright pencil inscription with the name shown, a year and sometimes more accurate shooting date.
In 2005, the gallery "GOST", an exhibition organized on the eve of the 150 th anniversary of the founding of the Tretyakov Gallery, where the first display these unique and rare photos.
