I read the article "Yusupov and monsters" of the exhibition of pictures by Felix Yusupov in Paris Yuri Kovalenko in the newspaper "Izvestia":
Eight unique pictures of Prince Felix Yusupov (1887-1967) presented at the exhibition, which opened in Paris Gallery "Arc-en-Seine." Exposition dedicated to the Year of Russia in France. Seven drawings belong to the owner of the gallery, Christian bud. Eight came from the private Parisian collection. All work was performed by Prince in 1929, when he lived in Corsica. The creative process was associated with nightmares that haunted him all his life. "In those years, I suddenly felt an irresistible draw, - subsequently remembered Yusupov. - Still drawing Irina (my wife): It showed all sorts of fantastic images - faces with huge eyes and a strange gaze, seemed some sort of otherworldly creatures. Impressed Irinin I started drawing his own. surrendered painting with fervor. chained to the table exactly magical power. But I have not obtained the angelic creation, and the nightmare vision ... Like an evil force, resettled in me possession of my hand. " Corsica Yusupov portrayed as a man possessed of devils, gargoyles, werewolves and other monsters, which in medieval tortured imagination of artists. He drew a total 15 works, called "Desire," "Envy," "Indifference," "Wonder," "Doubt," etc. Professional artists were struck by high technology, which can be bought only after years of occupation. But Felix has never engaged in painting. Then suddenly the desire to paint over. Since then, the prince never returned to creativity. Yusupov's granddaughter Xenia Sefira told that all her paintings are well known. They once hung in a parent living in Paris. How did these drawings were in the gallery "Arc-en-Seine? In 1975, 15 Yusupov works went under the hammer at a Paris auction. Seven acquired collector Alain Renard. After his death the heirs sold their Christian buds, which have always been interested in Russian art. For the first time the drawings have been exhibited in the prince's "Arc-en-Seine in 1988. Then the owner of the gallery offered to donate them to the Yusupov Palace on the Moika, which on the night of December 17, 1916 with the active participation of Felix Yusupov, was assassinated Grigori Rasputin. However, in those years in St. Petersburg no one showed interest in the creation of the prince. Today, each of the drawings sold for 20,000 euros ". http://www.izvestia.ru/culture/article3141828/ Последний раз редактировалось tchaika; 11.07.2010 в 23:38. |

"In the early twentieth century, the name of the man never left the lips: Moscow and St. Petersburg newspapers vied with each other have written about the outrageous escapades of one of the richest men in Russia. After Prince Felix Yusupov, married the niece of Nicholas II, and later proved to be the protagonist in" Case Rasputin, mentioned him the entire world.
Autumn 1933, it seemed, did not promise anything unusual. Trees, dropping the last leaves, caught the last nice days, and the bustling townspeople were preparing for the upcoming Christmas. But the news that had spread overnight in Paris, has destroyed the lyrical mood and bombshell. - Did you hear, my dear, Felix Yusupov, yet was not so, who they say they gave. I always suspected about this. Irina, his wife, with Grigory Rasputin ... Well, you know - hurriedly said an elderly lady in a strict gray suit. - How do I know? The whole town is only discussing the news: they say in Hollywood even made a film that is about to come on the screen. I simply must watch it! - It's time to put this upstart was in place. Just think, Prince! - Entered into a companion. The news that an American company Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer has created a painting titled "Rasputin and the Empress," which in very free-style form to use historical facts and the truth was on everyone's lips. Therefore, the first night of theater, located on one of the central streets of the capital, was filled to capacity. Those who could not get tickets, crowded at the entrance. Later their cared about only one thing: what will the reaction of the prince himself, the culprit hype. However, Felix's arm with his wife Irina have appeared at the last moment, when the hall was beginning to fade the light, and left the room without waiting for the end of the picture. And the audience for a long time apart, solving: the truth all this or is it fiction? "I figured under the name Prince Chegodaeva, Irina was named Princess Natasha, my fiancee, whom he married after I scandalous vicissitudes: in one scene, Irina is clearly inferior to harassment of Rasputin, and the other the groom confessed that, having lost the honor, she was unworthy of him. False was glaring. Irina was unable to ban the picture and decided to bring against Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's "action" - will write few years later, Felix Yusupov in his "Memoirs." But then he revolted not so much a distortion of historical facts, but the fact that has been wounded after his wife, Grand Duchess Irina Alexandrovna Yusupova, nee Romanova, niece of Emperor Nicholas II. "I do not want to remember the past", - confessed to the prince, but to restore justice, was ready to return to the sad events of those years. The trial was held in London in February 1934, managed to win, but it became one more reason for fans pozloslovit on regular escapades of the prince. But Felix was used to close attention of others: people are drawn to a mysterious story, similar to the unkind tale protagonists of which were all representatives of this ancient family ... curse of the Princes Yusupov
"On the eve of the twentieth century Princess Zinaida Yusupova commissioned from the artist Serov's portraits of family members. Typically, Valentin" swaggering and rich "did not write, but Yusupov did not refuse:" If all the rich people, the princess looked like you, do not there would be places of injustice. The answer surprised the artist: "Injustice is not eradicated, and the more money, Valentin. Hardly Zinaida meant social justice. For her, brought up in luxury, any lack of funds was the result of thoughtlessness and idleness, and therefore quite fair. Yusupov spoke about a higher justice, which, in her opinion, her family has been denied. The legend of the curse Yusupov exists in several versions. Even in the retelling of his family in many ways. The very Zinaida option retained grandmother - Zinaida Yusupova Naryshkina-de Shavo de Serres. "The founder of our family named in the family archives someone Abubekir Ben Rayok, a descendant of the prophet Ali, Mohammed's nephew. Titles of our ancestor, the Muslim ruler - Emir Al Omra, Prince of Princes, Sultans and the Great Sultan Khan. His descendants also ruled in Egypt, Damascus, Antioch and Constantinople. At the end of XV century, his great-grandson of Musa Murza ... conquered and destroyed the rebellious part of the Golden Horde. ... Changed the Mussa Khan Yusuf - one of the most powerful and intelligent ruler of the time "- the story, who knew by heart all Yusupov, was part of their heritage - the same as the family's jewels. But the intrigue was the fact that this is the semi-legendary Yusuf, who started the "Russian" branch of the princely family, became the unwitting cause of all ills that plague them in the future. As a child, Felix would hear stories of his mother, Zinaida Nikolaevna, who was reputed to be not only one of the most intelligent women of his era, but also the most beautiful woman in the royal court. It was from her learned Felix his pedigree, but at the same time about what angered the gods of their own legendary Yusuf. And that's what happened ... Nogai Khan Yusuf-Murza, against the wishes of compatriots, wished peace with Moscow, and fearing for the lives of their sons, he sent them to the court of Ivan the Terrible. And that Khan could not forgive.

From the memoirs of Felix Yusupov:
"Finally, the Archangel found a lover to my taste - an artist Serov, in 1904, came to the estate to write with our portraits. It was a wonderful man. Of all the great artists I met in Russia and Europe, he - the most precious and vivid memories. At first glance, we became friends. The basis of our friendship lay love to Arkhangelsk. In between sessions, I would take him to the park, sit down in the woods on his favorite bench, and we relish talking. The ideas of its markedly influenced my young mind. And yet, he believed that if all the rich people were like my parents, the revolution would have been pointless. Serov not sell the talent and the order is accepted only if he liked the model. For example, he did not want to do a portrait of St. Petersburg high society beauty, because her face was deemed uninteresting. Beauty all f persuaded the artist. But when Serov started to work, pulled her head a broad hat to chin. Beauty was outraged, but Serov answered with boldness, that whole sense of the picture - in the hat. By nature he was independent and disinterested and could not hide the fact that he thinks. He told me that when he wrote a portrait of the emperor, empress continually plagued him advice. Finally he broke down, gave her a brush and palette and asked to finish for him. It was the best portrait of Nicholas II. In 1917, the Revolution, when the infuriated mob stormed the Winter Palace, now torn to shreds. One piece picked up on the Palace Square and brought me the acquaintance of the officer, and a relic that I cherish as the apple of our eye. Serov was pleased with my portrait. I took it from us to Diaghilev exhibition of Russian art, he organized in Venice in 1907. Painting has brought unwanted fame to me. This is not like father and mother, and they asked Diaghilev from the exhibition to take it ... " Последний раз редактировалось tchaika; 15.07.2010 в 12:08. |

From the memoirs of Felix Yusupov:
"I liked Moscow St. Petersburg. Muscovites hardly touched alien influence, and they remained true hare. Moscow was the true capital of Holy Russia. The ancient noble houses in their luxurious urban and rural estates were in the old way. They are revered tradition and shun St. Petersburg, calling them foreigners. Rich merchants, all from the plow, was in Moscow on a special class. In the merchants' houses, big and beautiful, there were works of art, sometimes the most valuable. The merchants wore shirts, corduroy trousers and boots, bottles, and the merchant dressed in the best Parisian tailors wore jewels and elegance to argue with St. Petersburg's grand ladies. In Moscow, all the houses were open. Guest immediately led into the dining room to the table with snacks and vodka. Like it or not - if you like to feast. All the wealthy families had an estate near Moscow. We lived there in the old hospitable. The guest came on the day and could not stay forever, and leave posterity to live up to the seventh generation. Moscow was a two-faced Janus. One face - the church bright, golden, the sea of candles in the temples near the icons, thick Stesha monastery, the crowd moleltsev. Another person - a noisy, cheerful city, seat comfort and ease, a den, a motley crowd in the streets, riding three, jingle bells, rushing Likhachev, expensive cabs with magnificent harness, the young, richly dressed, sometimes pimps and their fellow passengers. This mixture of piety and licentiousness - purely Moscow. Muscovites have sinned so sinned and prayed as they prayed. Moscow was not only trade and industry: the minds and talents, she also did not hold. The opera and ballet performances were no longer worse than in St. Petersburg. The Small Theater set the same as in Alexandrinka and played - better. In Moscow acting family tradition passed down from generation to generation. At the end of the last century Stanislavsky founded the Moscow Art Theatre. Helped brilliant director no less remarkable Nemirovich Danchenko and Gordon Craig. Scent on Stanislavsky actor helped raise first-class power. Great actors performed his insignificant role. On stage there is no conditionality: all vital. I am in Moscow was an avid theatergoer. Off you go to Roma in Strelna and Yar: sang better there than in St. Petersburg. Who ever heard of Varya Panina, never forget. Before this ugly old age, always dressed in black, Gypsy took the audience for the soul of low exciting voice. By the end of the life she left behind eighteen cadets. Dying, Panina asked my brother to play on her guitar, her crown "swan song" and died as soon as it finish the. Our Moscow house was built in 1551 by Tsar Ivan the Terrible. At that time around was the forest, and Tsar Ivan was here during the hunt. Underground tunnel for several miles connected the house with the Kremlin. We built the house architects Barma and pious, they also built after St. Basil's Cathedral. After the death of Ivan the house was empty and a half centuries. In 1729 Peter I gave it to Prince Grigory Yusupov. When he was appointed Governor General of Moscow, we took the wing, connected to the main building of the conservatory. The house remained for balls and receptions. In Moscow, as in St. Petersburg, parents lived an open house ... " - Founder of the genus, the ruler of the Tatar hordes Khan Yousuf-Murza (killed his brother Ismail in 1556), who wished peace with Moscow, and sent to Ivan the Terrible two sons Ile-Murza and Ibrahim (Abreu). (Eldest son of Khan, not divided from the younger Russian beauty, brother killed twenty-five "). Ancestor Yusuf-Murza was Edigey Manga (died in early XV century.) - Captain, who was in the service of Tamerlane, and the reigning prince Nogai. - One of the Nogai ancestors Yusupov in the picture of Alexander Orlov "Rider". - Coat of arms of the Princes Yusupov. - House of the Princes Yusupov in Moscow, the Bolshoi Kharitonovsky lane, restored Academician Nikolai Vladimirovich Sultanov in the years 1892-1895. From the memoirs of Felix Yusupov:
"In the summer we went in Arkhangelsk. Many of his friends were going to see us, stay left and zagaschivalis until the autumn. I loved the guests or not - depended on their relationship to the Arkhangelsk estate. I could not stand those to the beauty of it was vacant, but ate, drank, played cards, yes. Their presence, I felt like sacrilege. From these, I always ran into the park. I wandered among the trees and fountains and tirelessly admired happy combination of nature and art. This beauty is strengthened, comforted, is encouraging. Sometimes I came to the theater. Climbed into bed for the guests of honor, and imagined that I was sitting at the theater, that the best performers sing and dance for me alone. I imagined a great-greatgrandfathers Prince Nikolai and absolute ruler of the Archangel. Sometimes he'll go up on stage and sing, as if for the public. Sometimes, before I forget what I think, I listen with bated breath. Ochnus - laughing at myself, and at the same time sad that charms dispelled. On Sundays, after mass, the peasants came with their children. Children were treated to sweets, and their parents are related to requests and complaints. Peasants were carefully listened to and almost always satisfied. In July, held festivals with dances and singing. We loved them all. My brother and I were always on them and waited for them to look every year. The simplicity of our relationship with farmers and our brotherhood in spite of their piety struck guests foreigners. Guest, we have an artist Francois Flameng (Francois Flamengo /Francois Flameng) was quite shocked by this. XVI century, in the XVII century, when new owners, brothers Kireevskys boyars, it periodically updated. In the early 1640's. s bought boyar FI Sheremetev, known for his role in the establishment of the Romanov dynasty on the Russian throne. In 1660-ies. by order of Prince Odoevsky who owned at the time the estate, in place of wooden church built of stone. At the same time, according to the name of the temple, the village became known as the Archangel.
Since 1681 Arkhangelsk belonged to Prince MJ Cherkassky, and by 1703 moved to Prince Dmitry Mikhailovich Golitsyn. After the death of Peter II in 1730, Prince DM Golitsyn was actively involved in the political struggle over the succession, as one of the main members of the Supreme Privy Council, and because of the Empress Anna Ioanovna was charged "with criminal intent" to deprive the Empress of power. Sent to Moscow, Dmitry Mikhailovich mostly lived in Arkhangelsk. Activities for nature, the prince turned his energies to rebuilding the estate. The old house seemed too small, and to the west of the old buildings, he began to erect a new two-storey house, in front of him laid out a garden-like fashion in Petersburg. However, the complete reconstruction of the prince failed. In 1736 by order of Anna Ivanovna, he was arrested, imprisoned in Schlusselburg Fortress, where he soon died. Mansion and Garden confiscated by the treasury. In 1742 Empress Elizabeth, returned the property to his son, DM Golitsyn, Actual Privy Councillor and Senator Prince Alexei Dmitrievich Golitsyn (1697 - 1768) who failed to support his father's endeavors, and his only son, Prince Nikolai Golitsyn (1751 - 1809), decided to turn his ancestral fiefdom of a "model farm meeting the spiritual aspirations of the Enlightenment. " According to the tradition of his time NA Golitsyn received a European education. Later, the prince made a three-year tour of Europe: he has been in Switzerland and Italy, France and England, Holland, Germanic principalities, Austria. At the court of Empress Catherine II, NA Golitsyn performed various diplomatic missions, was a member of the Committee for the management spectacles and music. In 1780, in Paris, the prince got to build his country house project architect Charles Gurney, initiating the famous architectural and park ensemble in Arkhangelsk. The construction of the building - in 1784. In the next 25 years the palace (Big House) was built in and around a park. Changes affected and the ancient village of Archangel. When the old prince died, his son - Prince Boris Yusupov (1794 - 1849) got a great inheritance - 250,000 acres of land, more than 40,000 farmers in different provinces of Russia, and with it the enormous debt.
Always lived in St. Petersburg, BN Felix is not often visited the Archangel, it had become for him what it was for his father. But the prince was to preserve the estate and the famous collection. For the distribution of debt had left to the ponds to catch fish, sell the Moscow University Botanical Garden, consisting of 9,000 plants. In St. Petersburg's Palace on the Moika were brought the best works of painting and sculpture. And though the Archangel remained book collection and many works of art, the Big House has lost its former appearance. In the "Caprice" and residential halls in greenhouses arranged room "for lease returns". Despite the apparent neglect, Arkhangelsk attracted contemporaries. A new stage in the life of the Archangel began with the transition of the estate to grandson, NB Yusupov, Prince Nikolai Borisovich Yusupov, Jr. (1827 - 1891). Devotedly fond of art and patronized artists and musicians, he was himself a violinist and author of musical works.
