Mysterious stone spheres of Costa Rica

Sixteen more centuries ago, Native southwestern part of Costa Rica were cut from solid material the balls with a diameter ranging from 10 centimeters to 2.4 meters. Their form is so perfect that one might wonder: how did they do? What is their purpose?
Stone balls found in several other countries such as Chile, Mexico and the United States. But the granite balls of Costa Rica is unique. Their quality is admirable, some have exactly the correct shape and smooth surface. Often they are made in groups of 20 or more units. Especially interesting is that often the balls are arranged in various geometric shapes: triangles, rectangles, and in straight lines. Often the figures indicate the magnetic north pole of the Earth.
A few balls found in the river delta Dikis. Others are found near the southern cities of Palmar, Buenos Aires and Golfito, as well as further north, in the province of Guanacaste, and in the central valley. A number of artifacts found with balls, has helped in their dating. According to estimates of archaeologists, some of these mysterious stones belong to the year 400 H. Oe. Most of them appear between 800 and 1200 year Mr. Oe. Some were found nearby, apparently, former homes, others - just next to the graves. Over time, some of the balls destroyed the people who searched for treasure in them. And yet, at the National Museum of Costa Rica there is a catalog, which includes about 130 have survived to this day round stones. But the balls are not included in the list, much more. Counting of these ancient monuments has caused a number of difficulties: many of them were removed from the old place and now adorn the gardens of one and temples. Undoubtedly, many have yet to find: they are hidden under the ground and in dense jungle.

How are they produced?

It remains a mystery. If we consider the accuracy of the form, must be inferred that there has not been without mechanical processing. Judging by the many statues of the period, manufacturers of the balls were skilled sculptors. In addition, objects of gold, the distant year 800 H. Oe. attest to experience high temperatures. According to one theory, while working on a workpiece it may be heated to high temperatures and then cooled, and then remove the top layers of rock. To top it off, the ball may sand or polish the skin.
As explained by one scholar, the bigger the balls, "made the most skilful masters, and their form is so close to perfection that the measurement of diameters with a tape and a plumb-line did not reveal any discrepancies." This suggests that the natives had the mathematical ability, extensive knowledge of stone working and know how to use tools. But since those tribes, apparently, was not writing, recording, production technology of the balls does not exist.
Most of the round stones are made of rock-like granite. The nearest granite quarry located high in the mountains, in the 40-50 km from the delta Dikis. How can such blocks were transported? If the blanks for the balls to get the quarries - the sculptors had to carefully monitor their descent. How to move without modern equipment such as a heavy load on the far distance? And how much, in fact, weigh the balls? Some of them are more than 16 tons!
If the granite is quarried in the quarry and then transported, then almost three-meter cube, which is required for a sphere diameter of 2.4 meters and weighed 24 tons! Perhaps the wide, smooth road, necessary for the transport of boulders, the natives had to run through the dense jungle. It is not easy! Other balls are made of limestone - the material, much like limestone, which occurs on the coast near the mouth of the river Dikis. The result is that the breed was floated 50 kilometers upstream. Balls found on the island of Cano, located approximately 20 kilometers from the Pacific coast.
What they were for - to anyone not known exactly. Maybe it is the tribal chief's regalia, or an indication of the exceptional position of the village. Or maybe it's religious or ceremonial character. Perhaps future archaeological research still will unravel the mystery Costa Rican stone balls.
