the State Historical Museum (Red Square 1) will host an exhibition "Masterpieces of iconography XIII-XIX centuries. from museums and private collections in Bulgaria ". The exhibition presents the art of icon painting in Bulgaria - one of the main centers of Christian culture in Europe. The richness and variety of icons illustrate the maturity of the Bulgarian iconography of creativity, the multiplicity of trends and searches in different periods of history. Works selected from the collections of the National History and Church History and Archeology Museum and National Art Gallery, the Regional Historical Museum of Varna and the private collection Svetlina Ruseva. On display are about 60 icons of XIV-XIX centuries and the shroud of the XV century monastery Bachkovski - priceless monuments of religious art in Bulgaria. Many of the icons exhibited for the first time. Selection of a product of various aspects of church painting and makes it possible to obtain a holistic view about the art of the Middle Ages and the Ottoman domination in Bulgaria. Particular emphasis of the exhibition - the icons of XIV century. Some of them are products of Constantinople schools and reflect the relationship with Byzantium, and others reveal the specifics of local art studios. Icons period XVI - XVIII centuries are two main directions in the iconography - the first associated with the painting in the grand tradition of icon painting school in Crete and Mount Athos, the second - with the various regional trends and manifestations of specific features of cultural identity. The exhibition includes two original works of XIX century - the so-called Jerusalem, related to Bulgarians pilgrimage to holy places. The exhibition also presents unique in its performance shroud Bachkovski of the XV century monastery, entirely unknown to specialists outside of Bulgaria and all times shown to the public in the National History Museum. The exhibition will run until 2 November 2009.
